Got my new HN7000s set up and registered (Without the CD!). I had to repeat a number of steps in the process. When the registration completed and the modem reset occured I got TX9 "The transmitter is adjusting for optimal timing" but it never completes! When I look at transmit status I'm getting twice as many failed trasmissions as good ones!
Yes, I've cleaned cable connections, swapped cables and used the birdog to verify that I get equal signals on both cables. There is no moisture present in the horn. Other than the BUC going bad, Is there anything else that anyone can think of that might be the problem?

Have you run DSSatTool? The new modem may think it is somewhere other than where it really is.

It is sometimes necessary to power cycle the modem to get passed a TX9.

Two Dons,
Thanks, but neither idea did the job. While looking for moisture in the horn - there was none - I did find that the lense was scruffed. There is a spot about the size of a quarter that looks like it had been rubbed on a brick. I have no Idea how that happened. Do you think that might cause enough signal distortion to be a problem?

I would be surprised. Scuffed or not, that plastic is pretty transparent to KU-Band microwaves. Water droplets are different, and cause a lot of scatter.

It might not be scuffed as in rubbing sand paper across it. But if it is crazed...internal cracking the edges of the crazing may reflect/bounce signal receive around a bit. Crazing is internal to the plastic. Crazing could come from chemical cleaning.

Chris,
No it's not crazed, but since I've had no luck so far, I'm going to remove the plastic and see what happens. Does anyone have a method of measuring xmitter output at these frequencies? Is there any obvious way that the new modem could be at fault? Things were a bit flakey before on the 6000 so I feel like it must have something to do with the older equipment.

My 5 1/2 year old dish has similar "scuffed" looking plastic. The unit works just fine and I would recommend that if yours is not leaking you not do anything to the lens. It should work just the same perfectly clear as it will with the scuffed look.
If you are having problems I would look elsewhere for a solution.

Michael and Bill,
OK, you convinced me. I won't pull the lense unless all else fails. Now, another question: If I decide to try replacing the BUC, does it make sense to go to a 2 watt? Does that cause any problems with Hughes?

If I ever have to replace my BUC I'll be going to a 2 watt. Makes sense to me.

Tim the Tool Man Taylor would do it [Wink]

A search of the forum for 2-Watt Buc will give you several discussions to read. Not sure if URL from search resuls works here but Click Here and if it does you'll see my search result.

Have you tried to use your new modem on someone else's set up? A very good way to test to see if the buc or LNB is not working and if it is the modem. I would try this before replacing anything besides the cables. A two watt BUC won't help much unless you are on the very faringe of the footprint of your sat.

Lee,

If you are buying a new BUC from MotoSat then it makes a great deal of sense to go with the two watt ! The price difference is only $25 !! However, you can buy a 1 watt much cheaper from other sources. I have not been able to find a good source for a 2 watt cheaply.

There are several advantages with the 2 watt. Increasing fringe footprint and getting a better rate code.

Thanks everyone for all the good info!! Mac, your search has lots of good stuff which I'll definately read. It's now confession time - problem found. We had a cold night last night and I went out to chech the dish allignment. The lense looked like it had been sprayed with water from the inside, so I guess moisture has been the problem all along although this is the first time that I've seen it. I'll now do a search for the best way to fix that! I know that the problem has been discussed extensively here so it shouldn't be hard to get some good ideas for fixing it.
Thanks again,
Lee
