What are the settings suppose to be for using outlook on Direcway?
These are questions from a customer who emailed me:

I sometimes can get it to work on the road.
In my office i have no problems sending or receiving on DSL.

I do not have a Hughesnet email address..i just use my own company domain email and outlook
Any help is greatly appreciated

Could they be experiencing the age-old problem of which SMTP server Outlook is setup to use? Probably their company's SMTP server is not open to the outside world so they need to use some type of authenticated SMTP server like GMail, Earthlink, etc. since they do not have a HughesNet account. The settings in Outlook are almost identical to the settings in Outlook Express.

Not a lot of information to go on. Agree with Mr. Lee that SMTP is usually the cause of most problems away from the home network.

Ashley - A couple of weeks ago I found myself unable to send mail via smtp.direcway.com, as I have always done since I became a Datastorm user. Apparently that server has now been disabled, so I had to find another SMTP server to use. I suggest you find out if your customer is trying to use the Direcway server for outgoing mail. -Herb

I got the answer from Motosat and what I was told is that the customer has to sign up for a HUGHES.Net email address. this will enable
Server Authentication and the Hughes.net mail server for proper access.
you then have to type in the login and PW so it can authenicate.
These settings have been been impleneted yet on this particular system yet..and im not in front of it. Its all over email and phone.
Why upto a month ago..he says he was not having this problem? any ideas

Ashley,
Could it be your customer had Internet Mail set up with DirecWay and work server. Do not remember the date for cut off for Direcway but that mail service should be deactivated by now. If they are trying to connect to Directway it cauld cause a hang blocking the work server connection.

I have Outlook98 and am not using Hughes for outgoing mail. I have an Outlook Internet E Mail service set up using an ISP for that.

Maybe someone eles with a little more knowlege can add to this.

George

As far as I know Hughes was discontinuing all Direcway service after 8-23-2006.You had to sign up for hughes account.
My 2 cents worth

You do not have to use a Hughes e-mail account just because you have Hughes as your service provider. Hughes, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL as well as your own domain IP e-mails all work with the Hughes service.
In this case it appears that he has his own domain and the mail settings are causing problems. It may or may not be on his end. Some servers will not allow their SMTP to be relayed through another service (such as Hughes) but the fault there is with the host service.
If that is the case then the customer would have to sign up for a Hughes e-mail address and use Hughes.net as the SMTP and check the "requires authentication" box.

And now Google is offering your domain email, not just Gmail like psmithsr@gmail.com

best, paul

You do not have to use a Hughes e-mail account just because you have Hughes as your service provider. Hughes, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL as well as your own domain IP e-mails all work with the Hughes service.

I travel a great deal and MOST SMTP servers will not allow what they see as relaying.

I us Outlook 2003 and I use my normal pop incoming settings and then use my gmail account for the outgoing smtp settings. There are ample instructions on gmail for using there outgoing smtp settings. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13278

If you need or want a gmail account drop me a line and I’ll get you and invitation.

Be sure and change the General Tab to reflect your Organization Name and Reply E-Mail setting.

I have smtp problems with my email host. Port 25 simply will not go through.

However, they gave me an alternate port to use for smtp, and email sends normally.

So ask your email host if they have an alternate port for smtp. It is done to interfer with spam.

Escapees.com is another server that will work through Hughes. An excellent RV organization. that and their snail mail forwarding service are worth their membership dues if you are a gypsy.
