Motosat told me to download 3.9.1 and to upgrade my controller. When I tried yesterday, hardwired, upon hitting next to begin, I got a screen not found then could not get back into 192.168.1.250, so I powered everything off and went away. Today, upon powering it on, I got the screen.

Thinking that I knew what I was doing, I connected the ethernet cable to be direct, but getting distracted, I never enabled the ethernet card and left my system on wireless.

I entered the update screen without a problem, choose the unzipped 3.9.1 firmware hex file and proceeded to upgrade. But like I said, I goofed and was wireless. The screen again went to can't find screen. Again, I could not get into that screen, so powered it off for an hour, then upon powering it back on, I notice that all lights on the D3 are now lit up, but I still can not access the D3. Have I wiped it out?

I have not called Motosat as it is after hours and I don't need the system but will call them next week. Just curious if I totally wiped it out attempting it wireless which I knew better than to do, but goofed.

Thanks

Mike

When you say "all lights are lit" do you truly mean "all lights?"

That would be a problem, unless you turned it on while holding down the front buttons.

Michael,
You "might" get lucky if you hard-wire the computer to a LAN port on the router and from the router to the D3.
Now set your computers Ethernet connection to 192.168.0.2 (or 3 or 4) and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
Now click on Start>Run and type in "telnet 192.168.0.250" (no quotes and be sure there is a space after telnet) and click OK. If you are lucky you will see a DOS box and then a prompt that says D2Boot%. If you are unlucky you will see "connecting to 192.168.0.250........" but you never will.
Should you get the D2Boot% message you can enter "nvclear" (no quotes) and hit enter (return). This will clear the RAM and you can turn the D3 off for a few seconds and turn it on again. If you only get the first couple of lights you can try to redo a proper update. If you get all 6 lights again then you are pretty much dead in the water.

Don,

Yes, all lights are on on the D3, every one.

Bill,

Sorry, I was watching the funeral. The D3 is down the hill, I will print off what you have written and give it a try after Church tomorrow. It is freezing in my 5th or I would give it a try now.

Thank you

Mike

DonB,

It is possible to have the D2/3 come up with all lights on without holding down the two buttons. It happened to me when I was upgrading a D2 and my laptop went to sleep in the middle of the upgrade. When I turned the D2 on again it had all the lights on. I was NOT able to communicate with it at all with many attempts. I figured I had messed it up and it would need to go to MotoSat.

But, on one additional attempt the following day I tried turning the D2 back on WHILE holding the two buttons. This time it put me in the program mode and I was able to complete the upgrade.

So, just because it has all the lights on it may NOT actually be in the program mode.

Bill,

I printed out the instructions, but look at them, after all these years in programming, I don't know how to set my ethernet connection nor my subnet mask addresses. Maybe the instant I see how I'll remember, but right now, I'm drawing a blank.

Also, curious about the telnet address. Currently, I telnet to 192.168.1.250, not 0.250. I'm curious as to why?

Again thank you.

Mike

Don,

Do I dare ask which two buttons?

Have you called your installer for help? That should be your first line of support and they should be able to walk you through all of this. Let me know if they can't help and I will try to walk you through all of the procedures.
As to the 0.250, the D2/D3 always maintain this address when they are in "Boot mode".

All D2 and D3 controllers leave the factory with a default of 192.168.0.250. You have to use that address when it is in boot mode. Boot mode occurs when the stow and search buttons are held down, and the controller is turned on. In that mode, it should have all lights.

Then, when you browse to 192.168.0.250 (after setting your computer on that .0.x subnet), you will may/should get the screen to upload new firmware.

After uploading the firmware, you should again start it in boot mode, telnet to the same address, and type in nvclear[return] which will completely set the controller to defaults. That is recommended for some upgrades, including 3.9.1, although I wish they would do away with it or add nvclear to the interface. Oh well.

Once you have run nvclear, again restart the controller, but without holding the buttons down. It will still be on 192.168.0.250, because it will all be factory default. You need to go into the configuration, set the IP to 192.168.1.250 and the router gateway to 192.168.1.1.

Once more restart the controller, and now you will have to set your computer back to 192.168.1.x to finish configuring the satellite, transponder, Hughes mode, etc.

Whew! You see why Bill recommends that you have your installer walk you through it step-by-step. He's done it a lot of times with his own customers, and knows how tough it can be to grasp.

Don, Bill,

Thank you both very much. If I can't figure it out, I'll let Tim/Barry enjoy New Years as I'm parked for a couple of months trying to get everything installed that I bought for the 5th and I'm sort of getting slower as I get older. I completely redid the inside (or am trying to).

Now, after 30 years of programming, if I could just remember to do things correctly (wonder if that is why they called me code and load).

Again thank you and I wish everybody a Happy and Wonderful New Years if I let you both rest and don't pester you again.

This is the best board on the internet with more knowledge than I have ever seen, Thank You.

Mike

And, my brain finally cleared a very small amount. Network properties and set IP and subnet mask rather than specifying DHCP.

Thank you again, just had to take it out of neutral. I've rather enjoyed almost not knowing which day of the week it is, sort of relaxing.

Thank you again.

Well, I broke it.

I took notes then left them in the 5th wheel.

I went into network properties, disabled DHCP and put in the 192.168.0.2 ip and 255.255.255.0 subnet.

I did an ipconfig /all and verified that it had the proper IP address. Didn't once, but finally got it to display properly.

Telnet failed, so did IE, which I figured it would. Upon failure, adapter went disabled and had to reboot PC to pick it back up.

Tried the power off of D3 and holding down the two buttons (dumb, aren't I, there are 6 lights, but only two buttons, sorry about the dumb question). Came up immediately with all 6 lights.

Went through the same procedure you gave me including verifying the ipconfig /all to insure right addresses, still failed.

Thank you again for trying to help. I need to insure I am fully engaged next time and not in neutral.

Happy Happy to all.

Mike

What did you set the gateway to? It should be blank/empty for this type of connection - if you have a gateway set, the computer will try (and fail) to use the gateway to get to the controller.

The gateway was blank. Nobody mentioned it so I just left it alone.

I'm assuming you are doing this entirely with a wired connection, WiFi shut down on the computer? If not, that is a critical issue. The computer and controller should both be on LAN connections on a router.

I would try, retry, and try again. Including powering the controller down/up-w/2 buttons. It may have failed, in which case this won't work, but you want to rule out any possibility that something wasn't set right.
