George,

You are the guy I have been looking for! We also have the Hughes receiver with our DirecTV subscription and have done everything but "rent a teenager" in our attempts to change the time zones with the remote. We cannot find any option in any menu that allows this. How do you do it? [Confused]

Bill,
When I was in the San Antonio area in June, I accidentally tried the low number channels 4,8 and 11 that are the Dallas/Ft.Worth (DFW) channels, I believe, and I was able to receive those channels. When I left the approximately 300 miles radius of DFW, I could no longer get those channels. I called DirecTv and they told me that this was normal for me but that the capability would no longer be free sometime this fall. I do subscribe to the LA and NYC network feeds and that is probably why I was able to get the DFW channels as well. But there will be a charge when the benefit goes away. No one told me about this - it just happened. Maybe they send me notice with my monthly statement about a special offer but I don't usually read those inserts in the statement. I understand that the reason that I received DFW channels is because my billing address in Arlington, TX. I was told that if I had a Denver, CO billing address, I could get the Denver stations while in their area. Something about a limited radius around some major metropolitan areas. Note that this has nothing to do with the regular LA and NYC network feeds. Yes, I did submit that special form along with my vehicle VIN or whatever that asked for.

Dick,
I just responded to your e-mail about my procedure to change time zones. Hope this works for you.

Bill, guess locals in far away places are like UFOs. I have heard stories but have not seen one myself.

That is probably exactly why you are getting the DFW channels George. We are in Arlington right now and have 76016 as our billing address and I picked up the mail yesterday from our forwarder and lo and behold there is a notice in there about getting free locals for awhile. It will go away next month I think it is and we will be back to switching from the sat to the cable for the locals.
