I have the L2 KVH in motion dish for direct tv. When I purchased my R15 two weeks ago I was told to keep my old receiver as I would need the low speed data port to capture the sat location. I did this and all worked fine. I would use the old receiver to lock in the right pointing parameters, and then switch to my new DVR.
But this week, the software on the KVH stopped booting up. I can hear the sat moving about, then I get 5 flashes on the green light on the switches, and then solid green. At no time does the software boot up and go into any of the three search modes. I get no reception at all.
The manual tells me the solid green light means it has locked on to a satellite.
I am wondering if the low speed data port has gone bad. Is there a way to test for this? Or is something else afoot?

I have an L2 KVH and use it without a receiver with a low speed data port. It sometimes takes a bit longer (you might have to press the SAT SELECT button a couple of times) to find the correct sat, but once found it works fine.
As far as you current problem, it is possible that you have somehow gotten the TracVision into the "DISH" mode. This happend to me once, and I was told to reset the unit to the Factory Default. To do this, you need to turn OFF the TracVision's POWER button. Press and hold the SAT SELECT button as you turn ON the TracVision system. Continue holding down the SAT SELECT button (5 seconds) until the Status Light flashes quickly 5 times, then release the button to start up in the Factory Default mode.
Hope this helps.

I have already tried the reset. When I reset, it flashes twice and then the solid green light goes on.
I am trying to get the dish to go into search mode, but it does not want to do this.
If I remove the lnb connection, I can hear the satellite moving around for several minutes, but no reboot appears on the TV screen. If I plug the primary lnb back into the receiver, in a minute or so it returns to the condition where it flashes 5 times and then becomes solid. Back to where I am now.

OK Charlie, I see now how to do the manual search without a low speed data port.
Apparently something is wrong there. If the green light is solid and indicating locked on to a satellite, pressing the sat button does NOT begin a new search. It simply stays locked on.
Any ideas?

I don't know. When I am not locked onto the correct SAT, I just press the SAT SEARCH and it goes onto a new search. What I had to offer was about the extent on my expertise.
Good Luck. If I think of something else, I will certainly let you know.

I am still not getting this fixed. anyone else have some expertise? I tried hooking up my laptop to the data port provided at the switch, and applied the data settings cited in the manual, but get no reading at all.
It appears my L2 is completely locked up. Would I benefit by removing the dome and taking a peak at what is inside?
If I cannot get it fixed by the Pomona FMCA rally I may try to get the KVH people to come take a look.

Smoky, You might possibly need a software upgrade. If you do not have a data port connected to a directv receiver, can you manually find a satellite? I know that the problem that has doomed the L2/S2 systems was the Software that can be changed inside the D10/D11 satellite boxes

Smoky, I have a KVH L3 system sitting on a shelf in Motosat's warehouse (at least I did before they moved). I removed it to install an MD500 Motosat system. The L3 is an in-motion system also, it has a low speed data port that is used to program it for the service desired (Direct, Dish etc.) and an on/off switch. When turned on it searches, locks on and continues to track the bird. It might require an update, I was always able to update it over the phone with KVH tech support - they will tell you what data to enter, using a laptop. If you can install it, we can have Motosat ship the L3 to you. If you want to pursue this Email me at madp0243@earthlink.net
