thinking of getting the new HR22 DVR for the 100hr HD recording capiblity but will have to use the add on AM21 OTA tuner. Anyone else using it? any glitches? or is it just like having an HR20?
Slightly off topic, for this list, but if someone could point met in the right direction. Our 2004 Airstream Limited, had OEM 19in Sony in the front overhead (like a MH) I put the 37in HD set on the credenza below, and want to use this space for the DVR, Blu-Ray Player and center speaker. I know there are "rack mount" systems for homes, where you buy rack mount compatable components and bolt them in the rack, perfect for an RV, anyone else do this? where do you buy the right size rack? I'm having a good carpenter modify the compartment but think the right size rack would do a good job securing everything.
Thanks
Dan

I'm not even sure you can buy an am21 tuner, and if you can, I was told that they will only sell those to those that have a commercial account. the bad thing about those OTA tuners is that you have to be close enough to the local towers to get the free OTA HDTV signals. Apply for the waiver and get east and west coast locals. Hope this helps.

I am fairly certain that you can buy an AM21 from Weaknees.com without any hassle. Yes you do have to be within reception of local towers but it does allow you to get, in some locations, a wealth of HD stations at no extra charge and without having to purchase a separate HD DirecTV dish. You will only get HD channels on east OR west coast, not both. The SD Distant Network Services does include both east and west coast feeds.

I have an AM21 off air tuner and it works great.
The problem in an RV situation is space..it is about an inch high and is the same depth and width as the HR21 and HR22.
You can surely use it anywhere while on the road..you just have to rerun a scan, just the same as you would on a digital tv.

We can offer them to anybody, Residential or Commercial.

I was wondering about the AM21. Does it allow recording just like it was a built-in tuner? Where does it get program guide info from? Do you need a network connection on the HR21 it's connected to?

Thanks!

The AM21 plugs in the back of the HR21/HR22 via a USB cable that is supplied. When you run the Antenna Setup via the onscreen menu, this is where it gets it setup information to marry it to the HD DVR.

I have a screwy situation with grandfathering.
I have the RV on the house account, all one account. I was able to get waivers for all SD except CBS, and for HD ABC and FOX. Not exactly sure why but to get the rest OTA have to have the tuner. all recievers are mirrored.
I still never understood why we could not PAY for and get DNS in ADDITION to our locals (not in place of) if we wish.
Just got the HR22 and getting the AM21 this week- HR22 has larger hard drive stores twice as much.

have the AM21 installed, bought it on eBay for 56 bucks including shipping. Ashley, you meantioned "run a channel scan" I dont' think it can do that. ie it works just like the built in tuner in the HR20. I was in Canada with that one and could not watch OTA tv.
it's annoying as a friends DISH VIP622 does in fact do a scan, if DISH does not offer locals you have "Digital Proramming" listed in guide, but at least you could set up a manual record if you wish.
can't do that with DTV.

Is there a difference between the HR20 and the HR21/22 w/ the external USB tuner?

If it's just the hard drive size and not hardware/software, I think the HR20 w/ the built-in ATSC tuners best for a mobile environment which is what I have at the moment.

I use an external 1TB SATA drive currently so the internal drive size is no concern to me.

Biggest issue, as far as I know, is that the 20 isn't built or sold by DTV anymore, so you generally have to buy a refurb on the aftermarket and pay a hefty price.

Glad I bought a HR20 back in March as we all know space is limited in the RV and the last thing I want are more parts if I can get it all in one box.

I pay for DNS in addition to my locals -- always have -- my account has been mobile since inception.

New can of worms. As we've noted many times, DNS+locals violates FCC rules and is not supposed to be possible. We are aware of a number of cases where mistakes on the part of DTV employees have allowed both. Advice to anyone who has managed it is *don't* *rock* *the* *boat* because you run the risk that they will notice and kill your locals (or your DNS).

Providing things like that (as a policy) is what cost Dish their DNS priveleges. DTV has been able to keep DNS because they officially do not allow rule violations. Mistakes don't count.

The reality of the issue is also why do you want to pay for both services when you can't use them? I don't know, I suppose $10-$12/month isn't an important amount of money, but why would you "choose" to pay for nothing for extended periods of time?
Yes, accounting errors happen but the only one benefiting for these mistakes is DirecTV. If you are going to be in one place for an extended period of time and want locals and have the antenna hardware that would allow this then sign up for the locals and cancel your DNS. When you are ready to travel, cancel your locals and activate your DNS.
That is MY PERSONAL OPINION and no merit should be given to this OPINION unless, of course, you agree!

Bill,

I move in and out of my locals zone pretty often and so I prefer them when I can get 'em and then fallback on the HD DNS when I'm out of the spotbeam.

I don't mind paying for both...
