quote: "For DNS service, current federal legislation does not allow DIRECTV to provide customers with primetime programming earlier than that same programming is available from their local stations. Therefore, only one feed of DNS service is available to DIRECTV customers. Qualified customers living in the Eastern or Central time zones will receive the East Coast DNS feed. All other customers will receive the West Coast feed."
By what they say the FCC rule is. Wouldn't it mean everyone getting the East coast by their billing address. Should still be able to see the later west coast feeds also.
But the ones getting the West coast, can't receive the East coast DNS before their Locals come on.
I won't miss the west feeds so much now that I have the DVR. Watch one network & record another the same time. And the $7 a month cut in the bill will be OK.
And they use to grandfather us in on new FCC rules. I was a few years ago on some DNS rules.

No information about the FCC rule there that I could find.

Just got off the phone with a supervisor at DirecTV, change is a coming. They are going to change everyone in RV's to a regular network package and if your bill was in the area of $85.00 it will go up about $20.00. The supervisor, Jinna, I talked to admitted that there was not a mention on the web site about FCC mandated changes. She admitted all my paperwork was in order, proper waivers etc. I have a feeling this change is coming from DirecTV itself, but she didn't say so. I have been with DirecTV ever since they took over PrimeStar, but I am seriously thinking of going to Dish Network.

Don't know Bill. The thing that bothers me the most is the "Untruths" I've been fed from various people I've talked to. I have been having trouble with one of my receivers during this same time period and having to deal with tech support also. Some seemed real nice and said they would put certain comments in the notes, so I wouldn't have to go through the whole story next time I called. That didn't happen. When I asked one person to talk to a supervisor, I was put on hold for almost 20 minutes, then told there was no supervisor available and I was handed of to a "specialist" who could take of things. NOT. I sent as detailed an email I could to DirecTV about their Customer No Service, hoping I will get a call from someone with a little real knowledge about the situation. Over the past few days the only thing I was able to accomplish was a $6.00 credit for local channels I did not order and a new receiver for the one that continually restarts itself and is arcing and making clicking noises.

It is really hard to know what is, or is not, going to happen. That statement applies to both DirecTV and Dish. I doubt that anyone at either company knows exactly what the next few months will bring, regulatory-wise, and certainly not anyone down at the level that talks to customers.
We are operating under a group of alphabet-soup laws that govern locals and distant waivers.
First is SHVIA, the Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act of 1999, which established waivers in the first place.
Then comes SHVERA, the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 which modified the 1999 rules to include digital.
Now there is STELA, the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act of 2010. Among other things it provides a path for Dish to get out from under the court order that they not provide distant networks.
The FCC is holding a number of regulatory hearings, and googling STELA will come up with all kinds of stuff that is hard to wade through.
I don't pretend to know what will happen, or who it will happen to. For example how does it affect me, with a home address in an area where there are NO locals carried by either satellite company? Will I be treated differently? Impossible to know yet.

I have had several emails from DirecTV "Resolutions Specialists" sice my last post, with no resolution. I have asked them why I am no longer eligible for DNS statiions, with no responce, just that I am not. I believe I have jumped through all their hoops: I am a full time RVer, I have a waiver on file (which they will admit), I do not have another residence in the United States, my mailing address is in Florida and is a UPS Store. What else do I need to do? I am going to start looking into Dish Network. I know there is a way to get networks from another source. I am a little leary of the requirement for switchs. My rig is wired so that each receiver (Bedroom and living room) is connected directly to the antenna. I have two feeds to the living room and one to the bedroom. I would like to have a DVR capability at least in the living room. How complicated is all that?

If there truly is a rule change, either current or pending, Dish and AmericanDirect are not going to be exempt. I wouldn't be doing anything rash until you see how this shakes out.

Talked to Dish and they now say that I don't need DNS, that I can get local channels (Networks) and all I have to do is call them up when we move and they will switch, at no charge to the local channels where we are. I find that to be a little far fetched, but both sales and tech support told me the same thing. My big gripe with DirecTV is they won't answer my question of why I am not eligible for DNS and how come my bill jumped to over $100.00 a month.

It may not apply to the places you travel, but what if there are no locals (over satellite) where you are? They cover a bit over 200 markets, but that's certainly not all of the US.

To further confuse this issue, I got the following notice in the mail a couple of days ago: "As of November 29, 2010 DIRECTV will replace your Mobile Vehicle Distant Network Services (DNS) programming package with a new $15 per month single coast package. This package will include the West Coast DNS feeds of ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC and the national PBS feed. ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC will be available in HD to customers with HD equipment and HD access. . . Existing DIRECTV mobile vehicle customers may instead choose to receive a dual-coast DNS package that includes both the East and West Coast feeds of ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC and the national feed of PBS for $20 per month. To upgrade to the dual-coast DNS package, you must check the box and return the reply card by November 18, 2010."
We do not have HD. I figure we're paying $16.50 now ($14 for DNS + $2.50 for PBS). So for $3.50 more, we get to retain our DNS. Not great, but not nearly as bad as it sounded like. And we get the addition of CW, which we didn't have before (nor do we necessarily want it, but . . . whatever).
They also included a contact for written inquiries: DIRECTV, Attn: Mobile Network Service, PO Box 6550, Greenwood Village CO 80155-6550.
This is different from what some of you apparently have been told, but I wanted to add it to the conversation for whatever it's worth. I signed the card and sent it in!

I haven't received my card yet. But I have seen on other forums many are getting it.
Sneaky way for DTV to get another raise in price from DNS customers. Making CW & PPS add on mandatory, when before it was a option $ to get them.
Doesn't look like the FCC rule effects Grandfathered DNS customers from getting both coast.
With tax both coast will be almost a additional $7 increase for me. I may just go for the one coast deal since I have the DVR. That will be a $1.15 a month increase from present both coast.

I finally gave up my DNS service, as they constantly increased the price and now I just call Dish and change my "service address" as we move across country. This changes the locals to those that serve the area we are currently in. Our home service address is the Boise area, but currently we have the San Antonio locals as we are in south TX. Been doing this for 2 1/2 years now, with no problems and it does work for us.
