Anyone using the RF Mogul DirecTV SWM HD 3 satellite LNB? How does this compare with the Winegard Trav'ler SK-3005 non-SWM 5 satellite LNB?

(Disclaimer, I work for Winegard as a dealer technician trainer.)
The Winegard can "SWiM" if you were to need this option (most users will not). The kit retails for $170. You still end up with a sturdier unit at a lower cost and with Nationwide warranty service locations at 1,000's of RV dealers and Camping World locations.
Functionally, the RF mogul unit works very well and locks on and stows somewhat faster than the Winegard but the end result is about the same as far as signal strength. As I am sure you are aware, RF Mogul was started by the former owners/employees of MotoSAT and they worked in cooperation with a Koren company called Wi-World to design and build the unit.

Bill - is that kit a modification to the mount, or is it just an SWM8 plus power supply, etc, that you install after the cables come out of the mount?

The kit is just a simple SWM8, power inserter, splitter and 4 coax cables. You would mount the weatherproof SWM8 on the roof beside the Trav'ler and run the 4 coax between the Trav'ler and the SWM8. From there you only need one coax down to the receiver or you can use the SWM2 output for a second receiver at a remote location.
Winegard has put together a good guide for wiring the SWM setup.

The only suggestion that I have related to this guide is that you should never try to use the setup on pages 7-8 when you could do the same thing with 2 SWM switches as shown on pages 5-6.

How do you get the "≤40 ft between antenna &SWM8" in any RV that the instructions keep pointing out?

Mount the SWM8 on the roof right next to the dish. Or at the tripod if you don't use a roof mount.

Many misread that statement. It means that the switch must be located less than or equal to 40' from the mount. It's a terrible way to explain that the SWM8 switch should be within 40 feet of the antenna. The best location (my opinion) is that you mount it 6" from where the cables exit the base and run 4 jumper cables between the mount and the SWM8. The editor should have fixed what the engineer wrote.
