I am in Celestino Gasco, Mx and on IA6. According to Lookangle my elevation shoud be 58.1. Should I be able to get a signal here or am I just totally out of the footprint of the Sat? I knew I would lose it somewhere in Mexico but was not sure where as the footprint map is a little tough to follow. I set up a few days ago but was unable to get a signal above 16 on the OPI. I thought that I might get a signal as long as the elev was above 46 degrees.

Another stupid question. Obviously I am not using my modem and router, but when I open the advanced page for the modem, I see the parks modem on Satmex5. Is this not a good thing for the park. If I were to send my coordinates over Wifi to it, I could change it. Is there a way they can lock access to it. Just trying to learn.

I can't answer your questions about IA6, but if your able to access the parks modem, then they haven't encrypted their wireless access point.

It may have been encrypted at one time and perhaps they needed to reset it and just forgot to reset their encryption... I seem to recall reading in another forum that the park was having some problems with their WiFi and needed to replace their access point... Whatever the reason I'm sure they would appreciate your bringing it to their attention.

I believe the owners/managers of the park are also members of the forum.

Even if they encrypted their wifi, if they are handing out the encryption key to guests, then guests would be able to access the park's modem. They would need to take another step beyond encryption to hide the modem. They might want to get a hardware firewall or something. However, the park is probably not that concerned about people being able to see the modem's web interface, since there is not anything that would be easy to mess up there by accident. Of course, a Datastorm or tripod user who knew the use of certain techniques could maliciously put the modem into a non-surfable state if they wanted to. But then someone can pour laundry detergent into the Jacuzzi, too, if they really want to do stuff like that... [Frown]

Scott is right, everyone in the park gets an access code. I guess only idoits like me would even look, but hey, I was just curious.

What about the Ia6 part, any answers? Wisdom? comments?

It looks like you might have gone past the .74 dish IA6 footprint. IA8 looks about the same and your about where I could not connect anymore. I would find the SAT fine but I was getting 100% transmission failure rate.

Thank you Joe, I was fairly sure I was out of the foot print, but had to try. I tucked the dish away and will leave it there until I get back in range probably around April or May next year. Sure wish there was a way to get on one the birds that reach down here. Oh Well.

Just cancel your Hughes service and sign up with MotoSAT. You will be on 117W before the end of the day!

There is a tripod dealer in Guaymas north of you.

Vela1...1598 He would be able to help you.

Bill is correct. If you feel comfortable doing it your self. Only you would pay more. But you would have 350 mg on the fap instead of 150. and be able to change sats when you need.

I hesitate to that as my contract will not be up for quite sometime, I think in Mar or Apr 07. I am sure there must be quite a penalty for canceling early. Thank you guys.

Bill, are you saying that as a tripod user, they could sign up with Motosat as their isp? and be able to switch sats for $50? That's a thought.

You can sign up with MotoSAT and the current satellite assignment is 117W (SatMex5) for 7000(S) modems. You might want to mention that you have a Datastorm from another provider (hint, wink, nod) should you ever need to switch satellites, but there is no charge to change satellites.

Darn! I wish I'd figured that out before I upgraded to the 7000s, I'm pretty sure I have a contract now with Hughes. Bummer.

Joana; it looks like Motosat charges $99/month for our basic $60 Hughes service. i think I'd rather pay $200 once a year to have my satellite changed should need be. Assuming I could find a dealer to do so, and I think that's pretty easy to find. Right, Bill?

Harvestmoon,
Joana has a different modem than you do, and pro service through Motosat is about $20 a month cheaper than your suggested $99 a month. As I understand it, service through most of the VARs is about $10 a month higher than directly from HughesNet for same service level, at least at the lower levels many of us use.
