Since you are closer to this than most, how about requesting that Onsat/Ethersat (maintain a mailing list to notify their customers of upcoming planned outages and software updates that will result in an interruption in services?
This type of notification is very standard for the mainstream ISP industry from consumer DSL providers up to internet co-location facilites.
I can't think of any reason for any business class ISP to not communicate with their customers in these cases -- for no other reason than to keep their support calls/costs down -- and to keep their customers from tearing out their hair wondering why they just went offline for no apparent reason.
