I'm a new DirecWay user and have performed 4 successful setup's during the last 2 weeks. My OPI stopped working and I've used my laptop located at the dish to do the setup. I've tried all of the procedures shown below with no success at getting the OPI to work. I would appreciate any information on the resolution of this problem.

We received our tripod DW6000 system in Casa Grande,AZ in March this year, and we love it. Have set it up 8 times, from Arizona up the West Coast to Blaine WA. We are on AMC9. Apparently from various posts I've seen, we got on it when it was first commissioned. The only problems were at Laughlin in mid-March, when I may have been trying to see thru a high voltage transmission line, and recently when my OPI has got tempermental. Two weeks ago I rebooted three times before the OPI started giving me readings. Last night at Cathlamet,WA., I gave up after Five reboots and got my wife on the Laptop with a two way radio to talk me in. Today, for the exercize, I shut the system down, inserted the OPI, rebooted, went to the pointing check,( middle line on the setup screen) and the OPI behaved perfectly, showing 59 Signal. We're kind of far-off here with an Elev of 24. If it will help build a case for Tech service, our DW6000 is SN 3140151, SW Creation date Dec 7 2004,13:42:17, SW Release Nr4.3.0.9 From the sound of the posts here something may be flaky in the system. If so, I hope it gets fixed soon

I have seen some of the same problems on AMC 9 with the OPI's & we at first suspected the meters were bad but it was specific to AMC 9. There is a discrepancy with the Sat Config file and the Verbiti parameter that Hughes states AMC should be set at 3/4, although I doubt the FEC (error correction rate) has anything to do with the OPI communication.

We also have recently purchased a Dusty Foot Tripod system and have been unable to get any signal. The OPI just flashes 8L8. Our dealer has been less than helpful with the problem. We have rebooted but have not been able to ever get online. Do I have a $1700 hunk of junk? I believe that we are also assigned to AMC9. LIZ

Please understand that if we could do something about this OPI situation, we would. It is clearly something going on with the DirecWAY system and how it interfaces with their proprietary signal meter. The fact that the problem is intermittant makes it harder to diagnose.
For the time being, until DirecWAY can get this issue fixed, you might try:
A: using a set of walkie talkies, and an assistant to call satellite readings out
B: get a wireless access point and wireless card if needed, and bring your laptop out to the dish
C: bring modem and laptop out to the dish while pointing
D: set a laptop in a window so its screen is visible outside
Sorry, to not have a better solution for this issue at this time. Please understand that it is entirely possible to get your dish pointed without the use of an OPI. The OPI just makes it easier (when it is working, of course)
Just wanted to let you know that I set up my tripod system many times using options B, C and D that Scott mentions in the previous post. I made up my own rig with a homemade tripod and used it several months before I bought an OPI so I can assure you the OPI is nice but not necessary.

Dusty: What are the options in switching satellites? I have been in Canada and Alaska the last two months and have not been able to access AMC9? Not a complaint, just a question.

You have to find a dealer or installer willing to switch you, few are willing and the ones that do charge around $200 and are rarely willing to work with folks that are not their customers.
If you find someone that will do it and especially if they have a good price please share the info.

When this happens, I generally find that if I reset the DW6000 and restart my computer, theproblem goes away. It is a pain but it works. I hope that dway gets a permanent fix soon.

I put in a request to my DirecWAY representative about this issue. Still have not heard any update from her about it.
I have to tread somewhat lightly with DirecWAY about this because from their point of view, end-users are not pointing their own dishes, end-users don't even own OPIs, and hence this issue is strictly an inconvenience for installers.
Of course, I want this issue resolved as much as everyone, but my fear is that too much pressure on Dway will just make them say, ya see, this is why end-users should not be pointing dishes. . .
We are towing a fine line here, even though the issue is clearly one that only Dway can find the real fix/solution to.

Just got home from 4 months on the road. Let the DataStorm find and lock on to AMC9, then brought the DW6000 inside and hooked it up to my pole mount F1, which was previously pointed at SM5. Connected the OPI, turned on the modem, and connected to the Advanced screen for the installer so I could successfully re-point my home dish to AMC9. The OPI shows 8L8, only. Wonder if the latest (4.3.2.7) modem software causes a conflict with the OPI? Gary

Just set up my 6000 again after moving. My OPI read 8H8, as usual - rats, UNTIL I started my manual xpol. Then it read "blinking 1 + 00" during queue. As soon as the test itself started, the OPI went back to sleep (8H8). I'm on AMC9 with the latest sw (4.3.2.7). Does this behavior give anyone any insight into the OPI problem? Jack

I just found this discussion and was wondering if there was an "outcome" to this.....was it fixed? Also is there meter options other than the proprietary direcway OPI?

The BirDog will help you point but won't do much for crospol and is abot $500. Some folks like the DigiSat but I haen't used one and don't recall the price.
