After our old 7000S died, I requested a new one and after talking to India for hours, I got an OK and it arrived this week. Started through the setup routine, and in the process, discovered that the new modem was assigned to 99W (G16?) instead of 83W. Although pointing at 99 is going to be a problem here at home, it can be done. The thing is, if Hughes changed the sat assignment, shouldn't they be doing something about repointing the dish? Not that I want them to, but the whole thing seems inconsistent with their policy to me! The other thing is that 99 has very poor coverage of Mexico which is our main reason for having the system. Since we don't have a VAR, do you think we can talk them into moving us back to 83, or better yet, one of the Satmex sats? Lee

Not sure, but have you tried pointing at 83W, peaking the signal, then running through registration installer? The modems all come in the box preset to a default satellite, but once you have completed registration, the modem will download the proper satellite information for your accunt, which may well bring you back to 83W. You are misunderstanding. You new modem defaults to 99W because it doesn't yet know what satellite you are assigned to. The fact that it shows 99W doesn't mean YOUR account has been changed.
Just have your dish pointed to 83W, go through the Registration Installer screens, enter your SAN and PIN numbers, following all screens to the very end. When you get to Restart, click it, the modem will reboot, and be online with the your correct settings.
That's a bit of an oversimplification, but we can offer more assistance in that regard if needed.

You can actually point at any satellite you like to do the registration (If your antenna is already pointed to 83W ignore this option). As you go through the registration installer you will be able to select the satellite that you are currently pointed at. What Scott says would be the rest of the process.

Ok, folks, the Next part of the story! I couldn't seem to get anywhere with the 7000s because it was telling me that the receiver wasn't locked even though the Birdog said that I had a good signal so I hauled out the old 6000. It, too said poor signal and unlocked. At this point with the 6000 I could change the xponder so I started down the list. On ever V,H I could get a lock with a very good signal (90) and on H,H, none!! It's my conclusion that the H LNB is bad. Would you agree or is there something that I'm not aware of that could cause this situation?

Just do your setup and registration on a V/H transponder (all the satellites in the registration transponder list are V/H) and use the HughesNet signal strength meter to point the dish.

And the story goes on...and on! Got through commissioning on AMC3-87 without any trouble. Then I repointed to AMC9, our old sat, and got the usual Receiver not locked. When I looked at the system info, I found that now I'm assigned to 127W!!! I'll have a hard time pointing at it due to trees, but worse than that the footprint says it will be difficult to use in the southwest and unusable in Mexico. What can I do now? I'll try to point at 127 and see if I can get on but even if I can, I think we're going to have to find another solution. Lee

I am confused. What satellite is your account assigned to?? 127, 83, 87 ?? I think you said it was 83 (AMC9). You should be able to aim to 83*, go through Reg Installer, enter SAN/PIN, reboot and be online. (if things go normally)
It would be very, very unusual for Hughes to have changed your satellite assignment. And if they did, it was by mistake. I have only seen it happen a handful of times in all the years I have been working with this stuff. Possible, yes, but very rare.
Hughes assumes your dish is bolted to your house roof. If they changed your assignment, they would have to roll a $ervice truck, which costs them money. So it almost never happens unless something else is going on.

Scott, I used 87 to commission the new 7000s as we have a better signal here. Our original assigment was to 83. After the commissioning,I repointed to 83 but couldn't get on. I then discovered on the system info page that our assignment was to 127. That's where it stands. Unless someone has another idea, I'll call Hughes explaining what happened and see if we can get moved back to 83. I suppose that I could try going through registration again on 83 and see if anything changes. Lee

You can try the registration again but it sounds like Hughes simply screwed up your assignment. They would have required an installer be sent out if they intentionally changed your satellite assignment. I would call them back and let them know that you got inadvertently changed and have them get you assigned back to 83 so you can re-run the registration and get back on the correct satellite.
