Got the tripod set up, but I have no idea what I'm doing yet. Can't figure out into which line the yellow "outdoor pointing device" and "IPO-block" go (the one to the "in" on the modem, or to the "out" on the modem).

I don't know if I show where the OPI goes, but it must be placed on the receive line, outside by the tripod. The OPI Block is marked showing that one end goes to the "Pointing Device" and the other end to the LNB.
Or do without it and use PC-OPI if you have a router.

Thank you, Bob. I am way down at the bottom of this learning curve, so please forgive my profoundly stupid questions:
The "pointing device" is another name for the "OPI," or little yellow gadget, right?
And the "OPI block" goes on the "downlink" line between the OPI and the satellite dish, with the correct ends toward each, and that cable continues inside the RV to the modem "Sat-in" port?
Should I have something in the display of the little gadget once it's connect in the line? I don't, but I don't know whether that's normal or if it needs a battery, or gets its power from the modem once it's plugged in or what.
What does "LNB" stand for?

Dragonfly, If you go to the Glossary you can find descriptions for most of the terms you will run into (such as LNB and OPI). Where did you get your tripod system? The yellow OPI has been problematic for at least 5 years, so many tripod users use the PC-OPI program (available for free in the Articles section) instead. What modem do you have? Has your modem been commissioned? If so, what satellite are you on? What transponder? What part of the world are you in? Did you get any instructions from whoever you bought it from?

I bought my system used from an individual. The modem is a HN7000S. I do not have service yet. It was suggested I get setup and "play around" with it first.
I have 2 manuals printed off the Internet, from MyDishMan.com, I think, which has apparently gone out of business.
#1 "How to Setup your Direcway" goes over initial setup of tripod and dish, and where the cables plug in, but does not cover the OPI or OPI block.
#2 "Modem Configuration" is a step-by-step guide to pointing the dish. I haven't gotten far enough to use it, but I can see it uses an "Align-a-site," which I don't have.
I'm an RVer, currently in southern Idaho west of Boise.
Thank you, Karin

Karin, Have you called HughesNet to see if the modem can be commissioned? When sold new there was a contract committment that had to be fulfilled. If it hasn't then the modem may not be able to be turned back on. The user guide Barb is pointing you to is a good one, and she keeps it current. You may have to use a dealer like her, or others here to get it commissioned, when you feel you are ready. Gary

I have been reading all night and I might be even more confused than before. Do I need more parts? Both "manuals" I've looked at have equipment I don't -- a "Birdog" or a "Align-a-Site." I don't even have a compass.
I'm sure nothing is owed on it. He said there wasn't, and I believe him. I think I will need to use a 3rd party though, because from what I understand, Hughes Net doesn't do mobile systems, and I don't want to get into a contract anyway.
Are you saying I have to get the modem commissioned before I can aim the dish? I have been reading at Barb's site, but it's a lot to take in, and I'm tired. I've missed something. I will look at it some more tomorrow.
Careful Bob, the way I feel right now I might take you up on that, even if you are 250 miles out of my way. I'm tired and frustrated.
Thanks for your help folks. I'll check back tomorrow when I'm fresh.

You don't need a Birdog or an Align-a-site, but you have no chance whatsoever of getting your antenna properly pointed without a good compass. Have you taken a look at Barb's site? MobileInternetSatellite.com

Karin, I wasn't kidding. YOu can park a couple of spaces from me, we'll call a dealer I know to get the modem commissioned set up, aimed and online. I'll give you some hints in setting it up and help you do some modifications to the dish to make it easier to aim.

Take Bob up on his help. He will teach you how to set it up and point.

Focus on chapter 2 of our user guide: the first half of the chapter describes commissioning and the second half describes a typical setup after commissioning.
