The last two or three weeks I have been having real slow speeds. Sometimes it works better to turn proxy off. Then sometimes it will take up to a minute or longer for a page to load. Sometimes they will load in 10-15 seconds.
Test the last two days.
January 8th, 05:41PM - 121/37 kbps
January 8th, 05:37PM - 110/27 kbps
January 8th, 05:36PM - 89/32 kbps
January 8th, 05:34PM - 95/19 kbps
January 8th, 05:30PM - 134/70 kbps
January 7th, 10:19PM - 76/13 kbps
January 7th, 10:17PM - 43/13 kbps

Cables? Modems? Hardware?

Today
January 9th, 09:14AM - 134/24 kbps
January 9th, 09:10AM - 131/19 kbps
January 9th, 09:04AM - 99/17 kbps
January 9th, 09:04AM - 99/17 kbps
January 9th, 09:03AM - 108/18 kbps
January 9th, 09:03AM - 108/18 kbps
January 9th, 09:02AM - 66/22 kbps
January 9th, 09:02AM - 66/22 kbps

Would it do any good to call GC and complain?
Signal Strength is 72 and that is good for 99.

I have changed port from 83 to 85 and not much difference.
Would Don's tweak from link help on my host XP?

Hi All,

for the past couple of weeks I have had a lot of problems with speed and connecting to DirecWay. My belief is that it is somehow related to upgrades to Windows, as I use the Windows auto up date feature and nothing else has changed.

DirecWay 4000 software is now old, in technology terms, and perhaps not as compatible with Microsoft's current version of their operating XP software.

I do not plan to quit using my 4000 based system and upgrade to a 7700 until I have to, as the loss of speed, reduced FAP limit, and other problems with the newer modems and plans, such as increased actual cost of service over time, will make me rethink the use of DirecWay.

Perhaps I will upgrade, but not until I get the same service for cost as I do now.

As an aside I have tried port 83 and 85 both are the same now.....BAD! Proxy on or off can help and then change, I think DirecWay is causing the problem with changes they are making and I think they will eventually turn us off unless we upgrade as there is no financial reason for them to support 4000 based systems.

I put Don's tweak in and not much change.
Upload may be a little better but downloads still suck.
January 9th, 09:24PM - 100/23 kbps
January 9th, 09:23PM - 112/35 kbps
January 9th, 09:17PM - 119/29 kbps
January 9th, 09:16PM - 98/29 kbps
January 9th, 07:24PM - 96/59 kbps
January 9th, 07:18PM - 83/32 kbps

I don't want to give up on the 4000 but may have to go back to my $15 month extra data charge on my 2g cell phone that was faster then this. But it didn't work everywhere.

I'm on 99 with original 4000 modems (user 98) and am in Quartzsite Az and am getting great speeds. And have all the XP updates you can be sure. So you are going to have to blame something else. If I can help let me know.

I did a testmy.net and got:
Your connection is: 1024 Kbps
(about 1 Mbps)
You downloaded at: 125 kB/s
Your TRuSPEED: ^info^ 1096 Kbps :: 134 kB/s (7% overhead factored)
Bottom Line: You are running: 18 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 8.19 second(s)
Diagnosis: Looks Great : 11.91 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com)

New test:
Your connection is: 1071 Kbps
(about 1.1 Mbps)
You downloaded at: 131 kB/s
Your TRuSPEED: ^info^ 1146 Kbps :: 140 kB/s (7% overhead factored)
Bottom Line: You are running: 19 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 7.82 second(s)
Diagnosis: Looks Great : 17.05 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com)

Since the 4000 modems require that software be loaded on your computer, your computers performance can have a great effect on your internet performance.
One thing you might want to try is to check to see if your browser settings are correct. Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Security Tab. Set each "zone" to Default Settings. Click on the Privacy Tab and set it to Default. Click on the Programs Tab and click Reset Web Settings. Be sure that the IE box is checked. Uncheck the Reset Home Page box. Click on the Advanced Tab and click on Restore Defaults. Click OK all the way out and let's see if things get any better.
Once that is done you should run the TCPOptimizer program. I am not sure if Don has this on the site, but I can send you a copy if you need it.

Assuming that you have version 1.0 (no slider bar at the top, all you need to do is put a dot in Extreme and then one in Optimal Settings and click Apply Settings. Reboot and you are done.

I am back. Had a Dr. appointment this morning.
Two hours after appointment time I got to see him. [Frown] Test report was good. [Smile]

OK I did the thumb to cable and set the TCP Optimizer as above. What a big difference.

January 10th, 02:38PM - 603/19 kbps
January 10th, 02:36PM - 549/16 kbps
January 10th, 02:34PM - 570/36 kbps
January 10th, 02:33PM - 553/12 kbps

I was running the TCP the same way before I started to get slow speeds. I changed it yesterday back to windows default. There was no change before or after with speed.

I have been downloading all the new MS updates. Could some of them be changing the settings?
Next slowdown I have I will go through all these settings.

Thanks [Thanks] I now like my 4000 [Big Grin]
