After over 3 years of a well operating F1-D1-4000 system, I felt compelled to upgrade. I have at least a good working knowledge of getting on satellite and on-line in a reasonable time with our new F1-D3-7000 system, thanks in no small part to the great info and instruction I found here on this forum.
I would like to move up to the next level by learning how to "tweek" the system for maximum speed. I have several specific questions regarding speed and browsing. If the questions would better be answered in private emails rather than taking up bandwidth here, I certainly understand and would entertain said-same from anyone willing to help this tech-challenged folk.
1. When using Testmy to check speed, should we be looking at the Kbps numbers?
2. Last night I tested at 1028 Kbps DOWN and 177 Kbps UP and I was happy. This morning, we got 6092 Kbps DOWN and 137 Kbps UP and I don't believe it is right. Is there a short answer as to why the 6M down?
3. Is there an instruction sheet explaining the procedure for "tweeking" for best xpol numbers. I will sometimes setup with a 4/5 rate, and the next morning, will have a 1/2 and can't seem to bump it up.
Sometimes I am amazed at how much I don't know

Don't worry. If there's a sure-fired way to do what you want, everyone will want to know

Dave, You can't do much to tweak speeds that are already that good. 1) See the first half of question 2. Those are good speeds if you can get them. 100-150K up and 800-1000K down are normal. The 6000K down is spurious and can be caused by a number of factors but most often by an A/V or download accelerator on your computer. You never did get 6M down. 3) Are you 7000 or 7000S. The S modem rate codes are difficult to understand and Hughes will not explain how they work. They can reset themselves to different rate codes dynamically and while a 1/2 might be showing you are still operating at 4/5. Rate codes only effect your upload speeds so if you are getting 100K+ up then your system is tweaked all that it can be.

Bill, I guess that I shouldn't argue with success, but will check all my connectors and clean them up or replace them just because.....
Some of my perceived issues with slow internet can be blamed on AOL. When things are really bad, I move over to IE and it usually picks up.
I can live with slow as long as I am getting most of what I can expect out of the system, and it sounds like I am.
The modem screen tells me that it is a 7000S. Just picked it up from MotoSat along with the D3 in Sept of this year. I guess that I won't worry about the rate code until someone figures out the Hughes game. I don't always have that high upload speeds so will continue to watch here and listen.
One other question I have is, can you look at your xpol numbers while you adj the dish for best SQ?
Thanks again for the input.

Dave, Speeds inside AOL will be about 1/2 the speeds that you will see using IE or nearly any other browser. AOL is aware of this situation with satellite internet and since they are not the provider they could care less. I have tried everything to get them to give me their proxy information and even though there is a screen option to change these settings they will not me the correct information to enter. As to the xpol numbers, you can go into the antenna pointing routine and use the manual xpol test. This will give you a continuous read out of the passing/failing scores. The higher you can get the better your antenna is pointed. Once you have done the best that you can you would run the automatic test to pass ACP.

Bill, Since we really don't use anything in AOL but the email addresses that Darla and I have had for over 10 years, guess we will move to the free AOL and do all else on IE or something else. AOL will not miss us and neither will Dish, but looks like we will have to make that move also.
Just as an FYI, my speeds right now are 153 Kbps down and 45 Kbps up, so as you can see, our speed is flexible......no changes here, guess just traffic.
Ps. We could have waved at you when we drove by last week when we visited a friend there in Tucson, but didn't realize you were down there. We are spending Nov here in Phoenix then up to St George for the winter.
thanks again.....

I like to use the Hughes speed test. Since the test runs entirely intra-Hughes network, you eliminate other network variables from affecting your test results.
This is a good place to put in a plug for Firefox - it is a fairly compact and efficient browser and I think its security is better than IE. One beauty of it is the plethora of plugins. I use adblock to block advertising. Flashblock blocks all annoying animated Flash advertising (you choose which Flash code you want to play in a web page.)

I'll second Firefox. Version 2 offers the option (it might be the default for users who are already using tabs) of opening a new website in a tab. And if you haven't been using tabs try them. They're a hoot! Version 2 even does spell check when you fill out a form.

Another Firefox user here. I use Fx 1.5.08. The other plus with Firefox is that the user group is monitored by people all over the world so if you have a question you can usually some kind of answer within minutes. I avoid IE like the plague every since some Ebay virus hijacked it and locked on to bogus Ebay sites...

The most popular Mac browser has been Safari for many years. It had problems with DS software. I swithed to Firefox Mac, glad I did.
