Cool update to the maps. I notice that when I click on a single user (myself, for example), the map zooms to my location as expected, but doesn't show anybody but me. If I zoom out, I'm still all alone. Zoom out far enough, and I'm apparently the last survivor.
If you zoom in from the main map to my location, it then shows all the other nearby map folks as usual.
I'm using FireFox. Haven't checked with any other browsers.

That is correct. If you want to be able to fly around the country and see other users pop up you need to work only from the index map, and the built-in Google zoom controls.
The serving of the maps is an intensive thing, because of the icon loads. Having only the icons that are in the area of the smaller maps helps a lot.
Having said that, I may change it. A few days ago, when Bing and Baidu and a couple of other spiders were hitting the site simultaneously I had a 2-hour period where my T-1 was saturated. 1500kbps without a moment's break, which was hard on the business site!
What I did about that was to remove most data from the pages that the spiders see. That is, incidentally, a search engine no-no, as they don't like sites that serve different data to humans, but since the maps are not a commercial enterprise and doesn't depend on searchers to exist I really don't care if they don't give me good positioning, or black-list the site.
Without the engines, which consitute a good 90% of the traffic, it might be reasonable to load the full icon file for each page. I will experiment.

Doesn't seem like the list of icons would be all that large. Are the icon images themselves taking up a lot of bandwidth? Have you considered serving them (and maybe other static data) from a server not on your end of the T1?

Oh, and FWIW, I'm pretty liberal with the robot blocking on most of my sites. They're all intended at specific member groups, and we don't much care if any search engine ever indexes them.

Each icon is only about 4K. They are not the only problem - it is the entirety of the pages and the number of times they are requested. The Map website logs show 43,366 requests in the past 24 hours - if they are served anything with significant size it really bogs things down. When I started feeding them limited pages I cut the total bandwidth usage for all of my websites by more than 50%.

Perhaps you could ASTRA2Connect, the European Satellite Internet provider. I am using this for almost 3 years now and it works fine. I mounted the then BUC (called iLNB) in my own Oyster TV satellite dish. Now I have both TV and Internet on the same time on this disk. When you need an icon to show on the map, it is possible to retrieve it from the Astra2Connect website.
Another thing. It would be very nice if the message field (Note) could be extended. I use it to inform my friends about my location and als whats going on. And sometimes it is al little bit short.

As a suggestion for additional designators, how about: Cellular: B - Bell T - Telus R - Rogers
This will cover almost every Canadian possibility and will not conflict with the American ones. We swap back and forth between Rogers and AT&T as we roam up and down. All the American users might want to indicate which provider they are roaming with while up in the frozen north and same for the Canadians down in the US of A.
As Daffy Canuck said way up top in this thread, we are finding that the coverage is not very good in some areas, so we might be reactivating satellite on a month-to-month while in the USA.
In any event, this is a good change! Thanks.

The cookie problem has been around for about 4 years now, and while we could get into the specifics of it and perhaps get you going again that would depend on the program you are trying to use, and the version of IE that is installed on it. Anything recent and you are out of luck in that regard. I've been promoting a move away from the cookie method for a few years now.
To operate without cookies, go to the Map Form tab at the top left of this page. At the bottom of the top section enter a Login ID and password - you can use the same as you use for the forums, or something different, up to you. Submit that form.
Then download dsmapsubmit from the articles section, put the ID and password in, and you are ready to go.
