I have just become aware of Norton's Internet Security Software and the new AOL Internet Security Software.

Just got a new Sony laptop and found that there was some sort of conflict between the New AOL Internet Security Software and the New Norton Internet Security Software.

Prior to this I always used Norton Works.

So what in the world is this new software, can AOL and Norton co-exist or should I get rid of one of them? I thought my Norton System Works was my Internet Security! Why in the world would there be Norton System Works and Norton Internet Security?

Why do I always have these problems? I do understand the PITA AOL issue but my wife loves AOL.

Thanks in advance for some enlightenment.

Don,

Norton Works includes Norton Anti-Virus (which is also a part of Norton Internet Security). However, Norton Works does not include a firewall and anti-spam software that is in Norton Internet Security. I suspect that it is the NIS firewall that is conflicting with AOL ISS. Assuming AOL ISS has a firewall, one or the other should be turned off. Multiple firewalls do not play nice together. NIS turns off Windows XP firewall.

It is not easy to turn off the firewall on NIS for more than the current session. It will restart everytime the computer reboots. Don't know about AOL ISS.

Sometimes enough is enough. Everyone is trying to protect themselves, their computers and beat spyware and spam, but multiple applications and tools will keep you so protected that you can't send or receive a thing!
My personal opinion is that you do not need NIS at all or any version of Norton for that matter. If your wife likes AOL, get rid of Norton and install an A/V like AVG (free from www.grisoft.com) which will just mind its own business and watch for the baddies coming in (most likely because you opened an e-mail attachment that you should not have). Install the new Microsoft Anti-spyware and let it do its own thing (remains active to block spy/ad-ware as well as scans to removed missed pieces). Turn on the Windows Firewall. If you don't get any bad stuff on your computer in the first place, who cares if the Windows firewall won't block outgoing stuff.
If you are a Static/Public IP user be sure that your router firewall is operating as it should, but since most Direcway users are using a Dynamic IP address your system is also being firewalled at Hughes.
I don't want to start a huge debate as everyone has their own opinion of what works and what is or is not needed, but it is important to maintain a bit of sanity when you see that multiple systems are not playing nice together.

AVG is not only "FREE" but runs unobtrusively in the background checking your files and email, and updates itself automatically, without all the hooks and tentacles into every nook and cranny of your computer that slow your system down.

Running 2 anti-viruses at the same time is definitely a bad idea. "More" is not necessarily better. And not getting "click happy" will go a long ways in protecting your computer also!! [LOL]

I have used AVG-free version for a long time. I think it is great. The one thing the free version will not do is run a scheduled system scan. I run AVG on all three of my computers.

But when I run a manual scan, I never get anything, because it has already trapped it.

As for firewalls, KPF (not free, but cheap) is good. It also checks for file additions/replacements, and lets you decide if it is something you expected. Also, it has a "pass through" mode, protecting the host computer, but allows computers networked with ICS be handled by a firewall resident on the networked computer. I run KPF on all three of my computers. KPF also has a remote capability that will allow any rule dialogs on the host to pop up on a networked computer.

Yes it will. [Smile] Click Scheduler and then Scheduled Task and set up what time you want it to run.

Larry's right! Mine does a scan every morning at 2AM and an automatic update at 5AM.

If you can't find it at www.grisoft.com go to www.zdnet.com and look in the downloads for AVG.

Larry & Karen,

Yes! Anti-virus software is notoriously bad at "sharing" resources, and you don't want two versions of them running simultaneously. I would completely uninstall Norton (including any live-updating software components that NAV may have installed separately) before installing AVG.

Thanks, to everyone for there help.

I have learned more about the Computer/Internet/Sattelite world from this super friendly Forum than from anywhere else.

Even when Cruising I will try to visit as much as posible.

Still scrambling, trying to get all the stuff done so we can throw off the lines. Its always two steps forward and one step back but we are making great progress and still plan a 7 Jan departure.

Curiousity has gotten to me.

I have been running Trend Micro software for 3-4 years on my PC's. Last year I upgraded them all at the same time as they had this great deal, 3 PC's for $25. I have never liked Norton and used MacAfee prior to trend Micro. The company I used to work for just switched from McAfee to Trend Micro for all of it's 10's of thousands of PC's and users.

One thing that I do not like about Trend Micro is that your maximum setting for updates is 12 hours and believe me, every 12 hours you get an update. it is almost like they use the average user as a guinna pig as my work PC never had these quantities of updates. My attempts to ask Trend Micro just that got ignored.

Are you saying that when my PC's expire in March that this product will do the job? I am behind the hardware firewall of Linksys so I don't use Trend Micro's firewall at all.

Thank you

Mike
