If you have a GPS-enabled Android device running 2.1 or later I would love to have you test my Datastorm Map Submitter for the Android.
I don't have a full info page up yet, but a page with 8 screenshots of the App in normal use can be found here: http://www.datastormusers.com/dsandroidmapsubmit.cfm The menu button on your device will have help options for the primary screens.
But..... I do NOT know how to set permissions to allow non-market downloads, nor how I would get the program loaded...
I DO know how to put data in the DROAD memory... (from a USB load or FTP load), but NOT the installation procedure.
I looked in the settings, but did not resolve the issue, nor have i been able to find info on the web to do so...
Any guidance ???

I had never installed manually before either, so I had to figure it out.
First I went to Settings/Applications and there is a checkbox for "unknown sources." Checking that will let it install, but in the meantime it had disappeared on me. I found it in Apps/Files/Phone Apps/Download, and when I tapped it, it installed.
Let me know how it goes. It is now on the market and you should also be able to download it using this barcode with your barcode scanner:

Don... you need to edit your link to the download above. www.dats to www.datas
But you really got me with the barcode. Hmmmm. I can use my barcode scanner ???? What barcode scanner ????
Ok, off to the market I went, and found the barcode scanner (a free download). After all, got to try it, right ??
Well, surprise surprise!! It worked! Of course I had not set the permissions yet, but that was no problem, as it took me right to that setting.
Program installed just fine, and then then login fails. As mentioned above by another user, my login/password did not work. Decided to try the DSMapsubmit version with login and password, and it too failed. So, using DSMapsubmit, i updated a new password (which I could do easily, because I had a cookie !!).
Ahhhhh, now the droid lets me in.
OK, now the location. Must not forget the (-) in the Longitude. I ended up in China. Before fixing that, I tried the "N" and "W" reference, but that did not fix it. Apparently, you need the (-).
I tried the "Get Location", but that simply opened up Google Maps, and placed me in the middle of a river on Interstate 244, in a place I cannot identify. The Google map does not return a location, and there is no apparent way to read the map. All that is offered is "Change View" (Photo View vs Street Map), and "Return to Notes"... so do not know what value that is.
Does the Droid think it is swimming in the River ??
Anyway, manually entered information, and then posted. Posting Confirmed.
You have a button -- "Stop Location Updates". I pressed that, but no sign of action. I thought maybe that was your "Exit". Is this a reference to continous updates of location ??
Well..... you wanted feedback !!

It would help to find location if the Droid's internal GPS were operational. Since i normally do not use that function (although i know it is available...), i turn it off. The GPS is a battery drain item!
So.... i remember that, and decide to turn it on. Then i open the DSAndroid app... and press "Get Location". At first, I went to the middle of the river again, but suddently, the image updated, and I found myself smack dap in the middle of my house! Imagine that. I was shocked!
But still no "hook" to say "use this location". So back to the DSAndroid app i went (using the return key), and to my amazement, the page showed by location, which was continually being updated by the internal GPS.
OK.... now we are down to the "Stop Location Updates". As i was watching my location being continually being updated...... hmmmmmmm sso i press the "Stop Location Updates"... and everything settles down. OK, now i get it!
Since the GPS puts the (-) in the field, that probably is not a problem anymore. However, for those doing manual entry (why would you do that??)... maybe a (-) by default, unless we have a lot of users in China.

Working here, Don. Thanks for the QR code, much easier than typing long URLs into the Droid browser.
David, I leave the GPS on all the time on my Droid and don't find it to be a battery drain. I can go all day and not use more than 50% of my battery, even if I use it for navigation for several hours. When the Droid is in standby, I think the GPS is also, as the map won't update until you wake the phone up.

First, thanks for the note about the bad URL - that is fixed.
Art - I unfortunately have no way of knowing how the application preferences are setup on the Samsung. Did you get any prompt when downloading the program?
For GPS, there is no "ON" button. There is an "Enable" button which is a big difference. Your GPS is only on, and using battery, when you have the GPS icon in the tray. Well-behaved programs immediately turn the GPS off when they are not the foreground window. Hopefully you will find mine well-behaved! Applications cannot enable the GPS - you have to do that.
Note that program operation and things like GPS and minus values are all in the help screen - use your menu key on the submit page.
There is a separate help screen available in the menu for the settings page that explains the login/password issue.

Dah...... he expected me to read the help menus!
And it was all right there... all i had to do was read!
OK then.... well, I guess I can report that all is working as it should (or in my case.... it wasn't working, and did what it was supposed to when not working until i did it right....).
Well done Don! You made it work. I must say the most fascinating part was the bar code thing. I had never heard of that. I could not believe that i could point my phone camera at a computer screen, and it would automatically "discover" the bar code, and with the press of the "open browser" button, a program would download to the Droid. That was trully amazing!
We might start reporting to you what type of Droid we have. It could make a difference. Mine is a Motorola Droad 2.
Thanks again for the application. This will make it handy for updating the map, when perhaps we are at a location without the coach. Great !!!

Since I have been bouncing around programming forums looking for the answers to thousands of questions as I wrote this App I have seen a lot of the QR codes. So yesterday somebody offline asked me why I hadn't put one up for this App, and I went looking for the How.
You can do one for any URL, not just an App installation. For example, this one will take you to my personal pages:

Don the app down loaded and stored on the sd card. When I attempted to install I was told " INSTALL BLOCKED, For security your phone is set to block installations of applications not sourced in Android Market"
I have searched the settings and have found no referenced to block or unblock.
The Bar Code Scanner worked fine to down load your program.
Possibly AT&T has made the block.
