Anyone have any thoughts / comments on the new bandwidth/pricing model from MotoSat?

I don't intend this as some type of complaint or anything. They've always been good guys, and helpful - and with the economy as it is I can absolutely see why they're tuning what they offer in attempt to remain profitable (not to mention the sat issue from june).

In particular, the lowering of contention at a given bandwidth - compared to cost. For example, was an older 1024/256 50:1 package for $199 now effectively equivalent to a newer 512/128 30:1 package plus a price bump for $246?

My main bandwidth concerns are VPN (rdp and misc remote tasks that can take longer as long as they're reliable) and then a cisco IP phone (which "should" work at 128/128).

I was also hoping it would be possible to go with the $164/mo base package, if that could be upped on demand for a period, and then brought back down - but that's been decided against, as far as I know.

Wade,
I would suggest you look around at the competition then make your choice... Definitely talk to each provider.

Who are the primary competitors? As in, no-FAP, iDirect (consistent latency / voip-able), reliable.

MobilSat has no-FAP plans with VOIP available. PPTP is blocked, but OpenVPN works (doubles the latency though). They also have some sort of hardware VPN solution.

I see Motosat is making some changes to service levels and pricing, remember Mobil Satellite Technologies has service available on Infiniti and now Evolution modems on G25 (93W). Here is a link to our rates haven't changed in 3 years.

Do you have anything that works with the iDirect 3100 that many MotoSAT customers are using?

Bud,

I have a customer that has to use satellite 12xW as no others can be seen from his location (trees). Do you and do you know anyone that uses those satellites besides MotoSat?

Bill - I'm using my iDirect 3100 with MobilSat. It's the iDirect Freedom plans at the bottom of the page Bud linked.

Joe, if you don't mind me asking, which plan are you on and what do you use it for?

I saw those Freedom plans (200/400/etc), but then saw iDirect below it and thought those plans were for something other than iDirect. Hadn't emailed Bud yet though.

We're on the Freedom-Pro plan. (Not sure where you're seeing 200/400/etc). We use it for general Internet access, including on-line gaming. Satellite is not ideal for gaming due to the latency, but at least it's possible with iDirect. It's really not with Hughes due to the extreme variability (jitter).

Don,

We will have a small network on 127W in a few weeks, it will be Ifiniti (3100) only. I will keep you informed as it progresses.

Thanks
