I tell ya, it is a sad day when your 76 year old mother is privy to some late-breaking technical news before you are, but here I find myself!
We both bought new laptops with Vista this year and neither are big fans of it. She read somewhere that if you bought Vista this year you can upgrade to Windows 7 for free.
While I don't typically choose to be bleeding-edge on upgrades and such, wonder if this one might be worth it, or perhaps wait for the first service patch...

TK, No experience with Win7 yet, but it's on it's way to me from Redmond. From what I have read, upgrade from Vista is really simple, and can be done without reinstalling your programs, however upgrade from XP can require reinstall of all software (other than the operating system). There are products out there that proclaim it can be done without finding all those original installation disks and registration numbers. Time will tell. Free upgrade from Vista would only apply to computers that were sold (since late June?) with that provision included at time of purchase, so may or may not apply for you and your mom. Gary

I have a new Dell that came with Vista (purchased in August). I upgraded about a month ago and all went reasonably well. No lost programs or anything. Did have to re-install printers, now most of the printers are plug n' play.
I do have a problem with the locator program in that it can't find the cookie for the member information. Also have a specialized program that doesn't want to print (to anything) but all the normal programs print with no problems.

Try right clicking on the programs that don't work correctly, click the Compatibility Tab. Check the Run this program in compatibility mode for:, open the scroll box and check the system the last worked for your program, I.E. Windows Vista (Service pack 2)

The DSLocator program was never updated to work with Vista. My DSMapSubmit will work with Vista cookies, but also has a user name/password mode that it can use instead of the less reliable cookie method.

I have two laptops with Win 7 Ult, temporarily. I just reformated my HD on one and installed XP Pro... I guess I still like to be "in charge" when it comes to using my PC. This is the best Windows I've used thus far... JMHO
