I just updated from 392 to 394 and now have a problem, I think self inflected. I think I have not completed the job in that I only did the update and have not gone in and done a nvclear. What is the required steps? What info do I (should have)need to have before starting?
I have now done the nvclear and can talk to D3 at 192.168.1.250 with browser I have info from modem (117W, 1270MHz, Symb rate 30, Rx=V, Tx=H) and put this in the D3.
When I hit search button, it seems to be looking in the area (azmuth) of 62 and should be around 172 degrees.
Do I now need to do a calabration?
Gary

step by step upgrade instructions are found here
and yes, you need to do an nvclear after the upgrade. you will find that in the instructions. after you do the upgrade, you will also need to install the latest sat table or you will most likely have search problems. instructions for that are found here

OK, so far so good. I have updated the satellite table and done all the steps from Dons list. Not sure how to set the trigger -- have it back to 3 right now.
When I do a Search, it seems to be looking about 180 degrees from where it should be looking. I even used manual control and pointed it to the correct direction, and when I started search again, back it went to the wrong direction. Any further steps I have missed??
Thanks Gary

Have you run the Dish Calibration routine? If so, you need to watch the screen the next time you deploy to see if the antenna is stopping on trees and telephone poles and all sorts of extraneous signals or if the antenna is passing by satellites. That will tell you if you need to increase or decrease you trigger setting. I suspect you may need to increase the trigger setting to 4.

Gary, Your signal trigger is simply too low. If it is still set to 3, change it to 4 (update settings) and try again. The antenna should swing around and not stop until it is pointing generally South. If it stops too soon again, try 5. One of those will likely work. You will find the signal trigger about 1/2 way down the Configuration page near Isolation Optimization which needs to be set to Low. You mention manually pointing the antenna but this will not work as every new search begins with the antenna azimuth at 0 so the first thing it does is return to the starting position and then begins its search. The only exception to this is if you actually found the correct satellite and were able to get a good SQ (above 31) you could then hit search and it would enter a peaking routine instead of a search.

chaning the trigger to 5 makes it work much better!
Now after it find and lock on satellile, I find if I move the dish by 0.2 left/right and up/down I can improve the signal quality/streingth a couple points.
Other than giving me something to do, I do not know if it is of any real value to go from quality of 79 to 84.
Thanks all for your help

It is unlikely that making that kind of a minimal SQ improvement will do you any good but it certainly won't hurt. A higher SQ will NOT give you better speed, but it might keep you on-line in a rain storm for an extra second or two. With time you will just let the Datastorm do its job and be glad that you have internet service whenever and where ever you park.

I already agree with that. I just am hoping that by tweeking things I can get a bit lower latency. This is what is hurting my use of the connection. Today after all the above, I am getting better numbers than in the last month. I have been getting number in the 1.2 to 1.9 second range. Today I am down to .9 sec.
I was thinking of changing from 117W to 83W but figured I would have to have latest software first which is what started me on this quest.

Nope! Sorry! SQ has nothing at all to do with your performance on any level, speed or latency. If you want to change satellites, then just call MotoSAT and they will change you no matter what software you have. It also won't change your latency, but if you want to change, MotoSAT is more than willing to help. By the way, a .9ms latency is very good and a 1.5ms is not unusual.

Gary, On your question about the avatars, do a search for "these little images next to our postings" in the About DatastormUsers forum and it should find a set of instructions dating back to 2003 that will be of help. Note that your custom avatar image should be saved in a relatively small file. Bill Adam's avatar is 100 X 100 pixels. The one you are currently using is 48 X 49 pixels. Mine is 120 X 120. There likely are more current instructions on the board somewhere, so be my guest and search at will for avatar instructions. Search feature is available at the top right of most forum pages. Gary

You need to upload the image you want to use to the internet. If you don't have a location on the internet to store an avatar, you can use the photo section of this site. The image should be limited in size to about 80x100 pixels. Then click on "my profile" at the top of this page, then click on "edit profile". Scroll down to Avatar Image and select the URL for the image.
If you are using an image on the internet, make sure that the file extension is in small letters, ie .jpg, .JPG will not work.

The problem is - the D3 is unable to identify any birds, including mine “Satmex 5 117W” but one (Anik F1 107.3W). Haven’t used the D3 since March 08 and I suspect the Sat file needs to be updated from all the relevant post I have read here. Spent 3, 45 min sessions searching.
My question is – On Don’s post in “Reference Material” he mentions clicking the "Import ⁄ Export Files" on the D3 page to load the “sattable10-3-08” file. I don’t see that on any of the screen shots of the PDF D3 manual, new or old. I just see “Update Firmware” in the lower left of the screen.
Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I carry everything out to the motor home and go Off Line. <g> Not sure what version my D3 is at current, but have downloaded D3.395.hex and the generous post by Bill Adams on how to up grade the D3 firmware, first if needed.
My questions – Why don’t I see the "Import ⁄ Export Files" in any screen shots, please confirm, and using an Ethernet to the D3, do I need to hook up the modem for the Firmware update and sattable update?

You need to have software version 3.9.3-1 or higher for the Import option to be available. Once you install 3.9.5 (yes, that's current) you will see the link.
