I just moved to a place 30 miles from yesterday's place and have a clear view of the southern sky. I tested the system before I moved, cycling the dish and getting a good signal on 89W. No problems then.
I just tried the dish again at the new place and it does everything right except it only gets a SQ of 29 and a SS of 719 before it says "search operation completed". Not good enough. I get TX code 6 (signal problems) and RX code 3 (not locked on). GPS appears to work fine.
I've tried searching 5 times more, once completely stowing the dish, with the same result. I have a D3 controller and a DW7000 modem. I no longer use the dish for internet but do use it for DTV with bird-on-wire. The signal is not good enough for that either.
Any suggestions?

What satellite table are you using? SQ 29 indicates that you are on one of the Hughes satellites, but not 89. I don't think that Motosat has a table that currently can ID 89. The one I have in reference can, but without extensive testing I can't be sure that it won't get false positives.
Since you aren't using the system for internet you can always try the opposite polarity - that will have no effect on your TV viewing.

I don't know what a satellite table is. I'm on the same satellite I've been on for a long time, 89W, including when I had it for internet service, and I saw its name, Galaxy 28, during the search process. I had a SQ of around 70 at my yesterday's location 30 miles away. And I stowed and raised the dish yesterday just to see that it worked since I hadn't done that for 8 months.
I don't know what you mean by opposite polarity.

Are you sure you are still on the same transponder? It's likely the sat table as mentioned above, but a transponder change will also cause that problem.

If you don't know how to check, how do you know it has not changed? Go to 192.168.0.1 and click on System Info. Write down the info in the right hand column and then go to the MotoSAT page (192.168.1.250) and click on Configuration. The info here should match what you wrote down from the previous page.

I haven't had to look at those pages for a long time. They match, 89W 1170 MHz, and the other info too, except for the router address and router gateway.
When I went to the Motosat page, I noticed the SQ had changed to 68 (from 29) and I am now getting the good codes (8 and 5). I did nothing to it for those 4-5 hours since I started this posting. I had to do the red button reset on my DVR, but DTV is now working. So all is OK.
I'm perplexed how the signal can improve that much by itself after the search is completed under clear skies. A Hughes problem? An unusual atmospheric condition? Since the dish didn't move, I'm also wondering if the DTV would have worked if I had reset it at the beginning.
Any ideas on what happened?
Thanks for your and Don's help.

If does sound like a Hughes issue or one with your modem possibly. The D3 might lock on but if there is some kind of a problem with the modem it would not light up. The fact that your DVR also had issues at the same time might indicate that you had some kind of a power issue. I suspect the TV would have worked all along after a reset since the antenna did, indeed, complete its search properly.

Over the past day, I've noticed that the modem is sometimes lighted with 4 lights (the 5th one doesn't come on since I'm not commissioned). Usually it has only 2 lights on. When I go to the Motosat page, it has the SQ down to 15 and the SS at 85 with the 6 & 3 codes. I've done nothing. Sometimes the SQ zooms up to 70 for a second. I'm glad I don't use the system for internet anymore (this has no effect on DTV). I wonder if this would be happening if I were commissioned.
It would be nice to know what was happening. I'm going to turn off the controller and unhook the modem since I won't be moving for 3 months. I hope I don't have a problem in September.

There really no need to have a modem in there at all. Since it's just going to make you ask questions, I would suggest that you just get rid of it, set the D3 to Generic and sit back and watch TV.

Keep in mind that we've pretty much determined that the Motosat Sat tables cannot ID 89, so when "I don't know what a satellite table is" is part of the equation I would not recommend generic mode!
I'm not even sure that my own sat tables can do that - there are no truly identifiable transponders left on 89.
Of course that could be why a DW7000 has trouble also...

If I have a problem with TV in September, I'll ask you how to do that. I assume the modem is not a problem, except for causing my questions. Is that correct?

That sounds right be since we know that 89W is an issue I would recommend that you update the satellite table using the Import/Export Files link and the table posted on this site under Reference Material.
