Normally I have excellent SQ of 68 or better and good speeds (1Mbps down, 160kbps up). Transmit errors are also excellent:
Number of Successful Transmissions 121114 Number of Failed Transmissions 1
However, about once or twice a week the SQ will slowly drop to 0 or 1 and stay there for as long as a half hour, sometimes longer. Then SQ slowly comes back up to 68+. At first I thought it was heat related as it would happen mid-afternoon and recover as the sun got lower, but lately it's been happening at any time of the day, even when the dish isn't in direct sunlight. We have been parked for over 2 months and the antenna has not been moved. I suspect it's HughesNet doing something with the satellite, but have no way to prove that. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

Ned - while I'm not on 127/1390 any longer, I have had similar experiences on 83 and 91 in the last couple of months. I think it is a Hughes thing.

When the SQ drops below 31 it does, as I would expect it to. I see the expected status messages too as the SQ drops and then comes back up. It behaves just like the biannual sun outages, but usually lasts longer and may happen at any time.

I have a customer on 117W experiencing much the same problem. The last couple of days it has been back to working again.

This has been happening over the past several months. At first I thought it was my LNB due to heat and even posted about it. But it's also happened on cool mornings in the shade so now I'm not convinced it's a hardware problem.
Since others like John and your customer have reported similar problems, but on other satellites, I'll just blame it on HughesNet, at least for now
I sure don't want to change satellites as I'm generally very pleased with the performance on 127/1390.

There is an interesting thread over on DSLReports. The last post below is from a guy who generally blames issues on pointing, grounding, etc. so it is significant.
Poster 1: I been having a problem every day now since this summer. All lights will go off expect for LAN and power. I just wait it out and it will clear up 15-30 mins later. I never had this such problem until this year and my equipment is only like 3 to 4 years old and also my dish installed in a open yard. each time it happens my Signal Strength is 15 and sky here is pretty clear.
Right now I getting a solid 80 on my signal (he is on 99)
Poster 2: I had some outages as well the last days, but not everyday. Signal 15. After a while it recovers, but stays unstable for a while (from 90 to 50 and then back to 80 and so on). Each time this happened and when I was back online I checked the weather in Maryland to find out that there are T-storm. (he is on 127)
Poster 1 again: ah maybe that explains it.
Poster 3: Although nothing is being said or admitted Hughes is doing a cutover to new or different equipment. These outages are deliberate. It would seem that a lot of transponders on SatMex5 are being changed. We have had upwards of 6 to 8 hours of signal level 15 with only power and lan leds lits for almost a month. (no satellite listed)
Poster 4: I agree with Joel (poster 3). I've had intermitten outages here as well, outages that can't be attributed to equipment at this end - or to weather at either end. Your current issue may be the same. That is, it may just be the NOC dick'n around
On the other hand, it could also be a heat issue - especially if it seems to start and end around the same time every day. The LNB has to have a usable signal before the transmitter LED will come on. That means if you lose the TX light only, your transmitter may be overheating. But when the LNB overheats, it takes the transmitter down with it - and the SYSTEM light follows. Try hosing down the LNB. (he is on 99)

I have begun to see similar issues on 83W/1290 on my own system as well as one of my customers systems. It works most of the time (I am using Hughes now) but when it starts to act up I will go down to 3 and sometimes 2 lights for a brief period. Sometimes this brief period repeats itself over and over again creating what is not really considered brief. The other day I disconnected the receive cable and grounded it for about 10 seconds (per the error code instructions) and it did appear to resolve the problem. I saw the same issue the next day briefly but I have now had good, consistent service for the last few days.

I'll have to try grounding the Rx cable next time and see what happens.

I too was having this problem. All the way down to only 2 lights. Then the back and forth.
I did notice that the modem (7000) was "REALLY HOT". AND.... the problem was occuring in the heat of the afternoon. The problem cleared.
On the next day, in the heat of the afternoon, the problem returned. I adjusted the arrangement of D4-Modem-Router, and provided an open airspace on all side of the 7000. Problem went away, and has NOT returned.
From this, I conclude the following. EITHER it was Hughes messing around (ironic timing), OR the 7000 modem was overheating. Allowing airflow to all sides (including bottom) allowed cooling and solved that problem. The problem has NOT returned since then.
Thats my story, am I am sticking to it !!!

It's a shame we have to presume it's the heat of the afternoon, ground issue, etc.....I'm at the cool Oregon coast on Sat 89 and this has been a daily occurrence since Hughes started changing frequencies around. My symptoms are the same described here with today (Aug 21) being the worst of the last week for connectivity problems. The temperature here is 63 degrees. The only reason I get angry about this is we all have the urge to tear our setups apart when things start getting intermittent. I'm starting to ignore problems and wait for a hour or two when everything will be ok again. Frustrating!

I wonder how wide spread the issue is? There are 7 Data storms in our small resort in NW AR. All 7 have given up and stowed and cancelled their service in the last 6 months including myself. After reading this thread I deployed my Datastorm and tried to lock on. It occasionally will show 77 SQ but won’t hold it long enough to lock on. I have always suspected a bad LNB since my unit is about 10 years old. I am on 99w 1230.
Some of the units in the park are quite new and have even upgraded to a D4. What we all have in common is all 7 dishes remain stowed.
I currently am using my Droid tethered to my computer. The other 6 RV’s are using air cards or Droids. That works fine here but I would like to get my DS working for when I get in a more remote area. I am just not sure sat technology is worth putting any more money into.
