Excuse me for my ignorance but recently I received a message that Hughes is doing a transponder change. All customers on SM5 will be moved from 990 to 1070. My questions are: why is Hughes doing this? When ALL customers are moved, does this mean that 1070 is empty? If not, suddenly a huge amount of customers will have to share 1070 and will that not dramatically lower transmission speeds?

Hughes does this so they can stop paying for an under used transponder. 1070 is not empty so 1070 will now have more users. It should not make your speeds dramatically lower (possibly not lower at all) but it's hard to tell until you get there. One user has reported that he has already been moved and seeing excellent speeds. Have you checked to see if your assignment has been changed yet?

Thanks Bill for your expert explanation. Switch of transponder is scheduled for June 27 and for the moment everything works fine. Which means slow speeds during the day and better speeds after 9.00 PM PST.

Additionally, would it not be that the more people are on a transponder, the lower the speed gets? And, about how many people are we actuallyt talking? How many can a transponder max have for promised speeds? How many people are now being moved from 990 to 1070? I suppose that is a substantial number and adding that to the ones that are already on 1070 would not decrease speeds?

loading for a transponder is probably around 8000 users. That can only be estimated, based on historical data.
That data has suggested that Hughes has used that number for at least 8 years. With a steady decline in total number of users they began moving people among transponders about 3 years ago, and periodically they get low enough on a couple (and probably at lease end) to kill one and consolidate.
Speeds have generally been variable more on a gateway basis - gateways have, probably, no more than a few hundred users, and a few that happen to be doing heavy downloading at the time you are wanting to use the internet will make a big difference.

Michel, check your modem you may have been changed over already. Hughes changed me from 990 to 1070 on June 9th. My speeds have been pretty good...
...but today I have been getting lots of 'failure to connect to web server' and 'DNS' errors but they mostly resolve themselves with a reload or three.

If Hughes can't keep their transponders correctly overloaded they can't make money. This has been the way Hughes has loaded their transponders since the beginning and they will continue to do so.

Thanks everybody for enlightening info. My modem says it is still on 970...

I got changed sometime since yesterday morning the last time I checked.
The Signal Quality is down to 53-55 and the old 990 was 63-65 at this location. Highest at any location was 71-72 on the 990. The 990 lost internet in heavy rain at 45-46. Download speed the same as 990 but upload is a little faster then before.

Larry... I'm about 380 miles North and a bit of east of you in Traverse City, Michigan. When I was changed my signal dropped from 71/72 down to 57/58. My speed is better then it was on 990 but the past couple days I've been having DNS/Can't connect with server problems. Overall I'm pretty happy but will have to wait and see what happens after a few storms roll through.
It would be nice to hear from someone down in the South or Southwest to see how the change affected their signal.

I have been on 1070 for several years now and travel all over. I am waiting to see just how this shift of so many affects us.....LOL. As far as the south and southwest, 1070 works very well there and into Mexico. We have been as far south as Hermosillo Sonora with it and no problems.

Thanks B&B. I've been on SM5 since '04 and it's served me well while traveling throughout the Baja, Mainland Mexico and down into Belize. I was just curious what kind of signal numbers people are seeing on the 1070 transponder in the deep south and southwest as this is my first time on this transponder.... and my signal dropped off significantly in Northern Michigan after the change from 990.
