Paul, in addition to the USB port, the dual box has two phone jacks like the combo box. However, you don't HAVE to connect a land line to the "line" jack on the dual box. You can leave this jack open the VOIP jack still works.
The combo box has two phone jacks, one is connected to the phone you want to use and the other HAS to be connected to a land line phone. If you pick up the land line phone then service is automatically switched to that one. Otherwise, if you use the phone associated with the VOIP, then service is switched to that one. You have no choice but to have a permanent land line plugged into the combo box. If you leave the land line jack open, then you will not get service on the VOIP jack. It took me several days talking with CU Phone tech support to figure this out. They exchanged the combo unit I originally bought with the dual unit without a hassle.

Paul, I still think it is iDirect - that is the one obvious difference. Skype can tell that a Hughes customer is in North America, but not an iDirect customer.

I hooked up a phone yesterday and tested Skype. Worked perfectly, but I was charged a per minute charge.
The initial payment I made was for a year of Skype Pro at Euros 24, which includes a Euro 8 credit, and it is that credit which is being debited.
I'm trying to engage Skype in a conversation at the policy level, but so far all I can get is boiler-plate answers:
quote:Thank you for contacting Skype Support.
Skype uses standard internet practices to determine your location and whether you call is eligible for “Pay nothing per minute” Skype Pro calls within the country. We look at your IP address which is generated by your internet service provider to ensure your location is within the eligible country. According to our data your IP address is not within the Skype Pro countries and therefore your SkypeOut calls are not covered by Skype Pro.
In some cases it is possible that users physically located in the eligible countries, but may have an IP address that places them elsewhere if they are logging into a corporate internet system or have IP addresses that can shift day to day (dynamic IP address). We suggest that you talk to your internet service provide in order to ensure that you have a proper IP address within the countries in order to ensure that you can take part in your subscriptio

I don't know this for a fact Don but I have strong reasons to suspect that they only check your IP once, when you initially register. We've skyped all over North America, including Mexico, at the 2 c/minute rate that we would pay from Nipawin, SK. That includes various wi-fi connections and limited use of the Hughes connection.
Its a great way to phone home from Mexico, can't beat the price!

Bob, with Skype Pro, the idea is that there should be NO per minute rate at all, but Paul and I are being charged.
Having both iDirect and Hughes, I just performed an experiment, calling my cell phone using each system. When on iDirect, the Skype window indicated a rate of 0.017 Euros per minute. while on Hughes, there was no charge. That tells me they do look at the IP for each call. From your post, I would guess you have regular Skype Out, and the rate you are being charged is the normal North American rate, so a Hughes IP or a Mexican WiFi would be the same.
Incidentally, there were significant dropouts while using Hughes, but as expected, none at all over iDirect.

Hi, I am Ron Dodge, a Brand new member as of today. I have skype pro. How did you resolve the echo problem? We can hear fine but the apparent echo when talking is hard for us to manage. Thanks, Ron

I don't get an echo. Could be because I have a great (iDirect) connection, but I would guess that it is also affected by the hardware on your end. What are you using?
I'm using a D-Link Skype USB adapter, with a cordless VTech 5.8 GHz phone.

I use a CU Phone RJ11 USB Phone Adapter Dual ($40) with a VTech 5.8 GHz phone and don't get any noticeable echo. I have the regular (not Pro) Skype Out and Skype In with Voice mail and my own phone number in the area code of my choice. I pay $60 per year and have never been charged a per minute charge. I have a Skype credit but it has never changed as far as I can tell. When I check call charges they always indicate zero charges. I'm as satisfied with Skype service as I was with Net Zero Voice.
