Well, we finally joined the digital TV world. Once my wife saw the HD channels on the over the air antenna she thought we needed to update our DISH to HD. Of course, I fought against it! [Rotflmao]
I know I need to get a new dish and receiver. Any suggestions? Anyone on this site that is a DISH dealer? I trust the people on here to steer me straight and would deal with a regular.
Thanks
DICK

IMHO, the VIP722 DVR is the only way to go.

Rather than tell you why, I just suggest investigating it on-line.

One thing I will say that although the literature for the 722 says you can record 2 programs while watching a different, pre-recorded program, I have found out that you can in fact record three, while watching another already recorded one.

That trick can be accomplished by having an over-the-air attached to, and programed by the 722. It will record one over the air program, and two satellite channels, while watching the pre-recorded program.

I've only done this three times because very seldom is there three things on at the same time that I'd like to watch. I only watch recorded programs now, not live - gets rid of the 25% of the programs being ads!

Dick,

Having a DVR like the model 722 will change the way you watch TV !! The Dish Network DVR is the best DVR you can buy.

What model satellite dish do you now have?
Are you up to self install or will you need a dealer?

Roaming the West & Don - Oregon--
Thanks for the replies. I had been looking at the 612 so I went and reread the online info and saw that the 722 has more capacity + other extras. On first read I only noticed the capacity difference.

Don-Oregon--Currently have DISH Pro. I feel pretty confident that I can self install it my self. Been doing my current DISH and HughesNet for about 5 years (Both on tripods). And I have a BirDog meter. And I read this forum daily!!!!!!!! [Big Grin] My email address is in my profile. We are currently in Fl.

If you want a tripod setup then Don's not the one to contact. If you are interested in an automatic roof mounted MotoSAT system then Don or one of the dealers on this forum can sell you the system for a self-install.
For tripod mounted antennas your best bet might be to contact Dish Network and see what your upgrade options are. They may send an installer with a dish that you can mount on a tripod and update you existing hardware for little or no cost.

Another question: From what I have learned there are 2 common dishes--1000 & 1000.2 Are they basically the same? Is one better than the other?
Thanks

I believe that there is also a 1000.4 which is for the Eastern arc users and picks up 61.5, 72.7 and 77. The problem Dish is having is determining what satellites you want/need to receive the HD programming. 110, 119 and 129 has been the generally acceptable combination but Dish is using 61.5 for the East Coast and 129 for the West with 129 having very poor coverage in the NW.

My wife has been on the phone with DISH, then they say we have to go to a local dealer, give us a couple of names, we call, phone not connected. Tried another dealer and he says we have to go thru DISH and they will send him a work order. Called DISH and they say it's not correct. You would think that in these hard times businesses would be crying for business!!! Finally found a dealer about 40 miles away that will work with us. But they want a $120 service/travel fee. But it's the best we have found. They said that they only have the 1000.4 dish and that is all they are allowed to sell.
Now--will the 1000.4 work in the west at all?
Will the DNS provider still provider the east/west coast (Atlanta/San Francisco)in HDTV?
I was sure hoping one of the regulars here was a dealer!
Thanks for all of you for answering my questions & I will probably have more til I get this taken care of.

I got tired of jumping through sat TV's hoops and now buy my stuff outright.

Sometimes it's hard to find a dealer (not just an installer) that you can walk into and purchase what you want but they ARE around in the larger cities.

I recently purchased a new, in-the-box 722 on ebay for a little more than half of what they go for at a dealer. I needed it (I thought) to replace one that kept re-powering a lot but I ended up fixing it myself before the new one arrived. Was only a bad contact point in the power wire inside the unit. So I now have a backup 722.

If you wanted to go the self owned route you could try ebay or if not an ebay type person there are places like http://www.solidsignal.com/ (no affiliation).

Luck to Ya.

Thanks Ed,
Let's see if I get this right. I can buy my own 1000.2 or 1000 dish and stay on 119, 110 & add 129 for the HD. DISH has already said that they will send us the receiver when we get a dish. No problem with EBAY. Once I get a confirmation on the above I'll get things going.
Any more hints/suggestions anyone wants to offer are welcome.
Thanks

Yes Dick, that's a charlie! I've got a 1000.2 on a Motosat (I think it's called a DP3 now).

Another good thing about the 722 is that even though there are 3 horns on the dish, only one cable is required to the DVR where its hooked into a special splitter (but its not a splitter as we generally know them) which then inputs TWO cables into the DVR (two recervers)!

We told the dealer that we didn't want the 1000.4 & preferred the 1000 or 1000.2 due to our traveling. They said they can just add an LNB to our current dish ( original 500 with SW21 switch then I converted the LNBs only to DISH Pro to avoid having to use the SW 21 switch) and we would be OK. Then we told them that if it didn't work we weren't going to pay the service/travel fee. I think they are wrong but we'll find out.

Dealer called this afternoon and they will not be able to set us up with a dish. This runaround almost makes me want to switch to Direct.
Now I will go the way 'Roaming the West' suggested above.
