Somehow we managed to get our HD-SL5 tangled up with a low hanging power line leaving the campground on PEI. It was OK going in, but not going out. Might have had something to do with the torrential rains the night before.

Anyway, the elevation mechanism is broken/disconnected, the SL5 head mount is broken (the part that goes into the arm and is held in place by the thin allen head bolts), and one of the wires pulled out of the BNC connector. And that's all I can see on a preliminary examination. Might be more.

We're at Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. I don't think there's any Motosat dealers anywhere near here, and I don't see any in Maine either. The one listed as covering Maine is based out of New Jersey.

Our route from here is towards St Johns in New Brunswick then into Maine and south, then west to Albany NY area.

Any suggestions for a place to get this repaired along the route?

Alternatively, how hard is it to take it apart and replace things if I can get Motosat to send parts?

It was installed by Newmar, but I think they used Elkhart Sat to do the work. I'd rather not wait until we get to Nappanee to get this fixed.

I'm also considering getting a tripod system as a backup, for when we don't have LOS from the roof mount. Any suggestions on dealers for that? I might order one, have it shipped to Maine, and use that in the mean time.

Thanks!

joe

I doubt the repairs you are describing could be handled by a local dealer anyway and I really doubt that this involves repairs you could do yourself. I promise you that you don't want to reconnect the mini coax connection!
I would suggest that you contact MotoSAT about sending the unit in for factory repairs. It will save you time and money in the long run.

I'll try calling them tomorrow. Would that mean dismounting it myself and packing it up? The base plate should be fine, and the dish itself, I guess. Maybe the arm. So just send in the base unit and the LNB head?

If you remove the 4 screws that hold the 2 round side covers you will find 4 more screws that hold the antenna to the mounting plate. You will want to remove those screws and send the entire assembly to MotoSAT.

OK, that sounds easy. I had the side covers off already, but wasn't sure what the next steps would be to dismount it. I expect shipping it from Nova Scotia would be outrageous, but I think we're going to head back to the states early now. Oh well.

Sorry to hear about the damage but MotoSAT should treat you quite well.
Once you are in the US the shipping should not be "too" bad. If the dish face appears to be OK, then remove the arm from the dish and send everything except the dish. This will save quite a bit on shipping expense. If you think there is any chance that the dish was damaged then send the whole thing (still remove the dish and pack it all together).

On first look yesterday, I didn't see any damage to the dish itself. But it's raining here today, so I probably won't be getting up on the roof. I'll still call them this afternoon to get the process started.

Joe,
Be very careful about checking the dish face. If you see any areas where it is bent or even the slightest warp, do not use it. This dish with Ka band, is extremely sensitive to any damage. I would suggest you replace it. You do not have to send it back but your repaired mount should come with a new dish. We have seen some very minor stress, that would have never have affected any other TV system, knock the Ka part of the system totally out.

You might also check with our techs and see if we have any reman. mounts in stock. If so we can send one out and bill you for the repair when yours come back.
