Does anyone tow (or know someone who does) one of the newer Toyota Tundra 4x4 trucks behind a coach? We are looking at a new one and realize that they are not towable 4 down without a driveline disconnect kit (from Remco?) I have Googled everything I can think of and cannot get much info?
Gracias.

If this is required to tow, it is a great product. We have had a Remco drive shaft disconnect on 3 vans over the last 7 years. It takes about 2 seconds to disconnect and about 10 seconds to re-connect. Only the rear axle turns and it does not add mileage to the speedometer.
As Dick mentions just give Remco a call 800-228-2481 or you can go to their website at http://www.remcotowing.com/drive_shaft.php

You can even follow this link to the Toyota Tundra compatibility chart.

I understand that it is very easy for the Remco kit to be installed slightly out of balance causing a vibration. Supposedly .25 gram out of balance and it rumbles. Have any adjustments/maintenance of the Remco kits been needed?

Remco balances their drive shafts and we have never had any issues with this even after driving through some of the muddiest fields you have ever seen during a couple of the big FMCA and Good Sam rallies.
We do periodically (once a year or so) spray the coupler with WD-40 from both sides (a good power wash would work as well) and hand turn the shaft to ensure I get it all. However, WD-40 will make dirt stick so after the WD-40, I spray with a heavy dose of a dry silicon spray to rinse off much of that and still have good lubrication.
Janet handles the connect/disconnect while I hook up the tow bar. It's quick and easy and I would recommend this solution to anyone who cannot tow any other way.
We did have a clip break one time that connects the push rod to the disconnect. Until we could get another clip I had to slide under the van and manually move the connection back and forth. A bit of a pain for a few days but it never stopped us from towing or stopping. I would suggest that you get an extra clip! We picked up 2 so I have a spare (somewhere!).
If you have a storage place, you can buy the entire drive shaft and store the original. When you want to sell the car just swap the original back in and you are back to the original configuration. Remco will also take your existing drive shaft and cut, weld and balance it to be re-installed on your vehicle.
If you have the time or inclination you can take the vehicle to Omaha, NE and they will do the whole thing for you at a very reasonable price.
We bought a van with the disconnect already installed. We moved it to the next van and after what we estimate to be about 10 years, we took the van to Omaha. I asked them to overhaul the coupler but they preferred to put in a new one. I believe they charged around $90 plus an hours labor and we had a brand new disconnect setup. I know, I know, I sound like a salesman but I am telling you that this is one of my favorite towing products right beside my M&G braking system. We also upgraded our tow bar to a Blue Ox from a Road Master and have never had a second thought about that!

Bill,

Great input. We really want the Tundra due to its handling, turning radius, 10,300 lb towing capacity, and overall quality. I got concerned when I called 2 Remco install shops and the mechanics asked if I was a "good mechanic" and if not, don't buy the Remco. Also, the Remco site doesn't show anything later than 2006 vehicles. Any other input from anyone would be great. Thanks.

I guess we are seeing different things on the link that I listed above for Toyota. It lists 3 2007 Tundras. Of course I don't know anything about your car so maybe I have that wrong.
Additionally, and I can't make too fine a point on this, as Dick mentioned, call Remco.

Dick Bradley, I have been very happy with my Remco driveshaft also. I pull a Lincoln Town Car. I am often asked HOW can I pull a Town Car (I am also often asked WHY I pull a Town Car).

Bill Adams, thanks for the tips about cleaning and a spare clip. I never thought about cleaning the coupler. I have never looked under there to see what the clip is, but now I’ll get a spare.

Here’s my dumb question of the day… vibration? Vibration when it’s disconnected, connected, or both? Obviously, I’ve never ridden in the car while being towed, so I assume you mean vibration when driving it normally. Mine is smooth as, well, as smooth as a Lincoln Town Car.

Thanks Gary and Bill. I bought the Tundra yesterday and ordered the Remco disconnect kit. It looks pretty slick and simple to operate/maintain. The Remco dealer in Yuma builds his own shaft to attach to the Remco kit. Claims that some of the factory Remco shafts arrive out of balance and his are perfect. We shall see.

How abut a update after you get the truck up and running. I also wanted to buy a Tundra but was told at the dealer it was not towable. Did not know about the Remco, so bought a Dodge 4x4

Glenn,

My last 3 toads have been Dodges, and they have done extremley well. I wanted the Tundra after test driving everything on the market. Absolutely nothing compares with The Tundra in handling, ergos, overall quality, road noise, towing capacity, turning radias, off road performance, etc. We will have the Remco installed in a couple of weeks, I will update this thread on our results.

I have towed a 2004 Tundra Limited D cab about 50,000 miles. It has the Remco drive shaft disconnect and the only issue I have had is the need to spray a dry lube on it a couple of times. No vibration issues.
