We want to have a Hughes net and Motosat Mobile satellite system installed on our motorhome.
Is anyone out there that trades the stock market in real time. Do you have any problems with the lag time of 500 ml sec. (1/2) second that this system has. If so, do you have a solution?

Thanks in advance. J. Judge

I trade stocks, but not in real time. My experience with Hughs / Motosat suggests that you could be severely disappointed and suffer financial losses in trying to work with the market in real time. There are times when it runs very slowly or stops, due to a variety of reasons. Interestingly, those events like to happen at critical times.

I have traded commodities and did not have a problem. But day trading is something I never looked into. I can't see how the satellite latency would have any effect. The time I waited was always for the guys in the pit. I found the Hughesnet connection to be very reliable, but, just in case, there is always the cell phone call to your broker as back up.

If you are trying to day trade stocks that require split-second trades then satellite internet is not for you. If you can live with your trades being executed in the next few seconds then you will be fine.
Since you seem to be concerned about a 1/2 a second delay this may not be for you. If you normally enter a limit order and wait for that limit to be met then you will do just fine.
If you use software that streaming live quotes, these will only be 1/10's of seconds behind what a Cable subscriber would see.

I am a commodity broker running my business over the satellite. There is no apparrant lag in my quotes after the initial morning software opening -- i.e., it takes a while for all the pages to load and charts, etc. to populate.

Order entry systems are a different matter. I would suggest that you not even attempt to try a browser based system using HTTPs (secure web sites). Make sure you have an order entry sytem that is run from a local executable file. Even then you could likely experience very slow response time. On my current system it take probably 15 to 20 seconds to enter and transmit an order, and that is about as good as it has ever gotten for me. Fills come back pretty quickly on market orders traded on a computer -- pit trades are dependent on how fast humans act. I am not an active day trader either personally or for customers so I can live with that kind of lag.

I don't trade stocks, but I do control a computer remotely via remote desktop...

There is a consistent delay in oommunications of about a second (round trip). It does not get longer or shorter. This is due to the time it takes radio signals to traverse the roughly 25,000 mile distance to/from the satellite, and other delays in routers, etc.

I never see the delay get longer, and so far I haven't seen times when congestion slows things down or causes timeouts. This could vary from satellite to satellite, computer configurations could come into play (I run a tight system), and conceivably I might not be experienced enough (having only used my F1 system for several months now) to have seen those critical slowdowns.

My confidence in this thing is growing daily.
