I recently purchased an RV with an existing set up. I have been trying to figure out exactly what it is that I have, what it is that I want, and how to make it that way. I can't get on the roof right now to get more information so it just adds to the fun.....
Here's what I know about what I have, it appears to be from 2 to 3 years old, I have no documentation at all:
1) Installed dish on roof. Branded with Direct duo, Datastorm, and Motosat logos. Any way to tell from the ground which dish it might be?
2) I can see two additional LNB's on a bracket
3) A D2 Motosat Box installed.
4) Three "Directway boxes" I think that makes it a 4020.
5) A Linksys wireless router that I don't have the wep password to. I am trying to contact the previous owner for it.
6) Two Direct TV receivers both receiving, 101,110,119 signals
Here's what I know:
I am receiving broadcasts from Direct right now using an account from my old stick house.
Here's what I think I want to do for the future:
1) I really don't like the DirecTV DVR and I think it will be easier to "convert" my BOW to Dish rather than figure out how to upgrade the whole dish to manage the 5LNB set up for Direct's future HD programming, I think I should convert over to Dish.
2) I would like to try this set up for internet access.
So my questions are:
1) Does it make sense to convert to Dish to maintain the most HD programming with the least equipment change? It seems to me that I am closer to having a set up that will be valid to receive HD from Dish for at least a few years than I am from Direct, since what I have now will be almost useless for HD in a few months. Correct???
2) As far as data goes, with what I have is there an upgrade that would be worth looking at that would increase performance? D3, modems etc? I have not even tried to set it up yet but if spending a few dollars will yield a significant change in performance I would consider it. I could spend up to about $500.00 on upgrading.
3) How do I get started setting up data to give it a try? I can't seem to get to the set up software, but I really have not tried very hard.
Sorry for the long post. I am a bit if a techie nerd but this is mostly new to me.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on the subject.

Your D2 is fine. If you can get your hands on a used DW7000 or HN7000 modem you can get your internet account activated through MotoSat. Hughes will not activate the 40xx series modems any longer so that is a doorstop. Your system was assigned to 117 at one time for the DirecTV HD system you have to work.

2) I can see two additional LNB's on a bracket This would be a TV LNB to receive satellite TV with the F1.
3) A D2 Motosat Box installed. This is the controller box for the F1. Although there is a D3 now, the D2 is a very good working unit.
4) Three "Directway boxes" I think that makes it a 4020. This is the modem for the Hughes internet service. Of no value now and not usable.
5) A Linksys wireless router that I don't have the wep password to. I am trying to contact the previous owner for it. You don't need the password, Just hit the reset button on the back and hold in for about 10 seconds.
6) Two Direct TV receivers both receiving, 101,110,119 signals The TV satellite equipment.

Correct??? You are correct that this setup will not work with HD for DTV in the very near future. Most likely you will need the NEW universal BOW kit to get Dish network TV.

There are actually 3 in your setup; the third is a little "lipstick" next to the internet feed - see SatKitA in the glossary tab, above.

Unless you intend to get a separate dish, that is probably a bad idea. For HD, you really need 129 with Dish, and most satellites you might be assigned to for Hughes internet will not be able to also "see" 129.
DirecTV 101, which has all the SD, is doable from most Hughes satellites. 110/119 is doable from a couple, and in the reasonable future a BOW for 99/103 will probably be available for most Hughes satellites. You can probably get a free DVR upgrade from DirecTV if you try.

OK so that brings up another option I was considering. If I were to just use this dish for Sat TV reception and use something else for data, would I be better off (meaning be able to receive more HD in the long run) with a universal BOW kit and Dish, or wait in hopes of a 99/103 BOW on DTV?
Once either change over was complete, which would provide me more access to more programming?
Maybe I should take that question to the Dish/Direct forum.....
Thanks again folks I really needed this help!!

At this point in time the BOW kits INCLUDING the Universal will only get you 101/110/119. You will NOT get many of the HD channels. MotoSAT MAY have a TV kit in the future that would allow 99 and 103. Your options are 1) wait and see what pans out this year or 2) get the new 5 head TV satellite dish now and have all the HD channels now and in the near future (HD-SL5).

OK, so let me see if I have this right. If I commit to just using the dish for TV, it seems that the situation with Direct TV is a bit unknown. With Dish network the path seem clear as long as I commit to not using a data plan. Is that correct?
If that is true, how do I go about getting a BOW for Dish?
Thanks again for all the help.

Jim, As of today (things will change in a year or 2) the only way to get all of the HD channels available from either DTV or Dish Net. is with a separate antenna. There is no BOW option available for your Datastorm that will handle all of the satellites for either service. If/when MotoSAT comes up with a bow for the 99/101/103 satellite combo you will be able to get most (but not all) of the DTV programming right now and within a year or 2 you will be able to all of the DTV programming except programming they call ethnic programming (Spanish language, etc.). There are no current plans that I know of that would allow a Datastorm BOW to receive all 3 Dish Net. satellites.
