Thanks Bill. I have not installed a Hughes config file. Not sure what that is unfortunately. I did install a new sat table not too long ago. System worked fine after that until I tried to use it again a couple of weeks ago after some weeks of down time.

Did not yet try the 999/10 but I will if these fail.

Plus, I was not quite sure how to use it. Should I be on a known sat and transponder before I change the D3 settings and do a "Search" or should I set the D3 to 999/10 and start the search from scratch?

990/33 became 999/10. You have to do a search for the D3 to force the modem to follow, but it doesn't have to be a search started from scratch.

Interesting development - I used the settings Don B suggested and the modem did light up. I ran the set-up (installer), got new key codes and all went well until the installation process re-directed me to the "Registration" web page. Got a message that the requested page is no longer valid. Process stopped and just sat on "Adjusting Network Timing" and never moved on. Any ideas?

The address that the modem uses for registration is included in the modems config file. It sounds like yours may not have been updated in quite awhile. If that is the case, look in the reference forum here for a link to the latest and instructions for updating it in your modem.

Found the latest config file and uploaded per instruction page. Re-ran installer but it failed at the same point with the same message. I have tried it on three different browsers with the same result (thought it might be a browser setting problem). All browsers work with other http pages so I am stymied again.

You must use IE to do the registration but that does not sound like your issue. Assuming you got at least 2 security warnings about blocked content (or similar) and were able to allow the program to continue, that part should be correct. You should be skipping the cross-pol screen by unchecking the Perform ACP options box and going right from that screen into the registration server selection screen. Do not do anything on this page other than click Next and your downloads should begin.
