We moved from near Sacramento to Red Bluff, CA yesterday. When I put the dish up it locked on but gave me the "can't communicate" transmit error. My receive signal strength was about 80. I was having networking issues (WiFi Ranger RC3 bug) so I thought perhaps the Datastorm controller had not updated my location in the modem correctly, so I did a manual update using the registration/installer process. I had a tripod setup for many years and used the registration/installer process before I became familiar with Don's utilities, so I am familiar the process.
I updated the lat/lon and continued through to the cross pol testing. That's where I am hung now. It fails at about 50. I have used Don's PC-OPI and manually adjusted the dish up, down and skew every which way with DSADMIN while watching the numbers. I can't get the cross pol above 50.
It looks like I am in an area of the country where I should be able to get on with no problem, but I can't. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I have a transmitter going out?

I don't understand what you mean about 1070. I'm on 1050 with a SS of 80. DSADMIN shows a config match.

Nothing wrong with either of your signal strength numbers. H and V transponders give dramatically different reading and readings on the same setup but different transponders will also be different. What settings are you using when you do the ACP test? Your specific setup or one of the setups from the drop-down selection? Have you updated the Hughes configuration file recently?

I have not updated the Hughes config file recently. I entered my parameters manually. Everything matches my System Info page.

I finally got it to pass. I had to crank the skew 2 degrees farther than the calculated amount.

Many of the satellites when viewed from the West coast will benefit from a slight adjustment to the skew. Sat 89W and 91W West will often not even work on the coast without a 2~4 degree adjustment. Usually 117W does not need it to work but will get a better CP score when tweaked.

Thanks, Don. I have a DirecTV HD BOW as well. I found that the signal from those 3 satellites improved as well. Looks like I will be cranking in a little adjustment while we are in the part of the country from now on.

If it is a D3 or D4 then you can go into configuration and add the 2 degree 'Skew offset'. If you are using a D2 then you will need to manually adjust it each time.

Thanks, Don. I have a D3 and had already done that before I read your post, but I'm glad to have the confirmation that it is a good idea.

Don, do you know if a skew adjustment is needed for 99W in the western states? We're in MT now headed to ID, WA, and OR for the next couple months.

Ok, thanks Bill. However, when I recommissioned in Texas in May, I did have to manually adjust the skew several degrees to pass cross pol. I'm wondering if my skew sensor is slightly out of adjustment. I haven't tinkered with skew since then, but I'm not happy with the rate codes I've been getting, almost always only 256k(1/2)TC.

The Datastorm does not do a good job with cross-pol. In most cases the adjustments are enough to get you on-line with an acceptable rate code. If you are trying to recommission or in any way working your way through the ACP automatic routine you are nearly always going to have to manually adjust the skew to get a modem commissioned. After that point the passing threshold is reduced and the Datastorm will do an acceptable job of pointing the antenna to allow access. If your rate codes are always poor no matter your location and this rate code can be improved every time by manual adjustments then you might have an issue with your antenna or controller.

Well, it's working well enough and I really don't want to sink any money into it unless it fails completely. If we were going to be stationary for a longer time I would tweak it, but I don't want to tempt the HN crosspol server demons In 3 months we'll be back on our fiber in TX and HN goes on suspension again. Thanks again.
