We have Directv on a dual LNB with two receivers that we took with us out of the house in the Chicago area when we started full timing last fall. As far as Directv is aware we are still in a frame house in that area. Our networks are still on local programming for the Chicago area and we haven't worried about it since we rarely have any interest in watching network television. However, we have become fans of the show 24 on Fox and want to be sure we can watch it when we don't have park cable or local broadcast that we can pick up. I am not talking HDTV just regular ol' vanilla fudge television -- no showtime, sports packages, etc.

What is the easiest and least likely way to run into obstacles to deal with Directv to get DNS for networks? There is a form on their website that they say to mail in. But I sure don't want to give them any leverage to try to raise my service costs for what I have now. Should I just call customer service and make the request?

Thanks

Bob Price

There is no way around the waiver. You must fill it out and see an actual copy of your RV registration to prove that you qualify. Your local programming (about $3/month) will be discontinued and the DNS service will be added (about $9/month). You will then receive Network programming from both NY and LA(not Louisiana). It takes 10 days to 3 weeks for the programming to become active. When they are, you will find the programming on channels 380-389.

DirecTV doesn't care that you're in an RV. They know we have ours with us and even helped walk us through how to use it. As Bill says, you must mail in the waiver. Then if they don't respond within a couple of weeks and turn on your programming, nag them. Oldtymr's also hooked on 24. [Smile]

Have fun!

If a subscriber has local programming, do one of the east or west coast network feeds automatically come with it? Reason I ask is, I had the west coast feeds long before they began offering the local programming, yet I still have the west coast feeds.

No. There were registration errors made in the early days of DNS. We had E/W and FL all at the same time. It was great! Then we returned to FL for awhile and canceled the E/W until we traveled again (big mistake). When we hit the road we asked to have the E/W re-instated and they would do so only by turning off FL. After awhile the signal was spot-beamed so it made no real difference, but I kicked myself for a long time for making that call to DTV.

Thanks for the info Bill. That makes my 2 year commitment with the R15 a little easier to swallow now. Sometimes when we get up north near Don B in Humboldt County, the LA stations get a bit hard to lock on and the west coast feed comes in handy. [Smile]

I think you will find that you will be denied for DNS if you request it from you "Stick House" account. I was only able to get it by setting up a seperate account for the MH. As an added note, I just received yesterday my "Denial" of adding the HD Channels to my MH, even though I have a waiver for and recieve regular DNS Channels. Apparently Directv does not have to ask each local channel for the regular DNS service, but does in order to add HD. Go figure.

This is a hair-tearing-out issue. We have 3 receivers in home, 1 in RV; they're mirrored. Have local channels at home. Was denied DNS service for the RV 2 yrs ago & was told 2nd account was only way to get it (use only 1 account at a time depending on if home or in RV).

Am re-applying & after talking to 2 different reps, am told situation is this: to get DNS in RV, keep existing single account; must de-activate the RV receiver so it's not mirrored. They get my request, hopefully approve it. When on trip in RV, activate its receiver, de-activate the 3 home receivers. Pay the additional $9/mo for DNS only while on the RV receiver. When return home, activate the 3 home receivers, de-activate the RV receiver, & not pay the $9 DNS fee.

Does this sound right?

You're welcome, Bob. Glad to help. I don't know much about most of the stuff on this forum, but I had a fair idea on your question. [Smile]

Don't have a clue, Betty. We have one receiver and one account, that's it! Anything more than that is far too technical. [Wink] Good luck!

Here's our situation for whatever it's worth. We have TiVo and regular reciever at home, just got HD Tivo for RV. We were grandfathered (?) have locals at home and ABC/NBC/FOX DNS (CBS denied) When I asked for the HD DNS feeds, I got ABC and FOX no extra charge, denied NBC and CBS.
Why oh why do they make it so difficult for RVrs?
I mean calling them to turn off the house and turn on the RV is extra work for them. Are they afraid our cats at home will be watching our locals? [Smile]

Bill,
In the early days of DTV local channel programming, DTV was unable to offer local channels in many parts of the country, so a lot of DTV users were provided with DNS E/W feeds as an "alternative". Prior to 2003, when local channel programming became available in an area, those who had the DNS feeds were grandfathered and could keep the DNS feeds and still receive their local channels. I think you may have fallen into that category. However, when you made your "big mistake", you lost the grandfathered rights to keep your DNS feeds with local channels.

At the time we began the DTV service (2000) the local channels were available in my area so I never would have qualified for both services.
