I am a current Dish user. As you can see by my signature, I am receiving 119 from the BOW and 110 from my Winnegard. With the upcomiming demise of the DNS channels I am thinking about the issues of moving to Direct.

I currently get the DNS channels from Dish and I have my physical address changed everytime I move. At that time, I also request the local channels in the area I am in. However, lately I've received a lot of flack over that request and expect that I will no longer be able to change my local channels anytime I move.

So, here's some of the questions I have regarding Direct:

1) I am currently on 113-SatMex6. Is there a BOW position that will get me the Direct satellites with a dual LNB? Will I need a multi-switch with the use of a dual LNB?
2) If I have to continue to use the BOW and the Winnegard, is there a multi-switch available that will combine the two satellites into a single signal and does Direct support that?
3) Can I rely on a local Direct installer to understand the BOW and multiswitch?
4) How long does it take to be approved for the distance channels from Direct? Do I get a choice of West/East feeds? Will I have any problems doing that on the road?
5) When I'm up north and faced with moving to a satellite with a northern footprint, what problems will I face? Is there a specific 7000S enabled satellite that I should request?
6) Will I be able to switch local channels as I move?
7) At one time, I considered moving to Direct when my assigned satellie was 89W. I ordered and received a second universal kit along with a LNB for Direct use. I now have a universal kit installed on both sides of the feedhorn. Is that a dual LNB and will it work in my situation?

Any help will be appreciated!

Dan and Sarah,
1) Yes, the universal "B" kit set to the number 8 mark will get you the 101 satellite.
2) Unlike Dish, DirecTV only requires the one satellite for "almost" all of their programming so could use either the BOW or Winegard but would not need both.
3) Yes.
4) 10 days to 3 weeks or more.
5) You will just need to change to any of the available satellites other than 99 or 127 and your universal BOW kit can be reconfigured for that assignment.
6) You are not allowed to have DNS and Locals (one reason Dish is in trouble). If you do want the DNS programming that's all you will get. If you want locals only it's a crap shot as to whether the person who answers the phone will allow the change but generally I would not consider this to be an option.
7) No. The one LNB would be mounted on whichever side it needs to be for your current satellite assignment. The one single LNB has 2 outputs for coax connections and that is a dual LNB (dual outputs).

Those are the short answers. Let us know what more information you might need in deeper details.

Bill:

Wow! Thanks for all the info. There's more information here than I ever expected to receive. I think you've answered all my questions. Now, all I have to do is get off the dime and move to Direct!

Thanks again Bill. I know you didn't have the chance to meet all of us at the rally, but we all had the chance to meet you!

Thank you,
