Satellites have changed ownership many times, with the only impact to date being that we have to learn new names for them if the new owner decides to rename. Telstar to Intelsat. GE to Americom. Panamsat (Galaxy) from Hughes to KKR to Intelsat. Etc., Etc.

Does that effect the software used in the D3 or the Nomad II that rely on identifying the satellites in orbit? It seems the Nomad has an update just about once every month.

No. The satellites don't broadcast something that says "I am G16." Motosat has to try to find a frequency/symbol rate/polarization that is unique to each satellite, and unfortunately the satellite owners don't mind changing things, or a new transponder will have the same characteristics as one they were using on another bird. So Motosat has to constantly be in reactive mode to play catchup.
