Morning all! Just curious. What is the average signal strength everyone gets running a mobile (tripod) setup. Does it vary due to loacation or is is consistant? I'm just curious. I run a 6000 on AMC3 (87W) and average 55 to 60 on signal strength prety much wherever I am. Just curious and thanks!

It varies on what satellite you are on, where you are located, and weather conditions. With 7 Dway satellites in the fleet and a huge country, it would be really hard to come up what is a standard signal strength. From my experience, 55-60 on AMC3 is just fine.

The biggest difference is the satellite, as each has different power. Next in line is location, followed by transponder. So, to get an accurate idea of whether you have normal signal strength you need to compare with users in the same general area on the same satellite, with same transponder being best of all.
There are several location/satellite combos in the US that make signals in the 50s completely normal. On the other hand, a signal that low on one of the satellites (SatMex5) puts you completely out of the usable range.

I once got 74 for a long time on IA8 but lately its been 65 tops, same spot I am always at so it changes no matter what you do, its like Oklahoma weather, nice oneday, cold the next and stormy the next.

I'm assigned to #83, AMC-9 and normally see signal strength readings in the 70's.. I think I got one in the 60's and one in the 80's but all over the 70's looks rather normal to me.... Less some idiot with a radar detector is parked across the street, then it's closer to zero

We are on 83w also. Here in Baja, where we've been for almost a month, the best SS that we've seen is 55. At our southern most point, 16 miles south of Loreto, we were seeing 48-50 but had no problem passing cross-pol. At home, Petaluma, CA we see 58-60 max. In Quartsite it was about 62-65. So thats our experience, for what its worth. lee

I use sat 1A6 and the best signal I have gotten to date (only at my home location so far) has been 51. I am hoping when I travel the signal will become stronger..

I am in the NW corner of Washington State at this time. I'm on AMC9 (83) xpndr 1370. Its 23 degrees elevation from here. I am getting 65-70 receive and 65-70 xpol shooting through a hole in the tress and the perpetual overcast.
For whatever its worth.

Sat Mex 5 1070 and in the southwest US we get low 70's, northern Mexico high 60's and mid Mexico mid 60's. It will be interesting to see what we get in southern mexico...

FireDude: I'm so glad the Scott had to put me on Satmex5 when I bought my unit instead of one of those problematic ones. I run around 79 to 87 everywhere I go, accept Western Canada where I got O for O. No exagerations.
Good general speeds, accept when those aliens stand in front of the transponder windows on the satellite and make faces at it.

I've run AMC3 for 2 years. I average strengths in the 50's to the high 60's occasionally a touch over 70. Checked from AZ to Boston to Rapid City SD to Louisiana.

In general, cross-pol of 99 is an error. Not always, but if you get that every time it certainly makes an error more likely. SM5 has not dropped in power, and there's also no reason to be getting such low signals on SM5 unless you are in the Pacific Northwest. Since you are on the 117 line of Longitude, unless you are near the Washington/Idaho/Canada border I would be checking everything very carefully - pointing, cables and connectors.
As you probably know, if you are dead on 117 yourself the dish should be absolutely horizontal in terms of skew.
