You were right Bill, no cell phone reception is necessary for the dishpointer on the iphone to work according to dishpointer AR support.
Dishpointer on android - google in there great customer support now requires you to have logged in with dish pointer in the last 5 days or no work!! That is what why I paid for it, to find the internet so I can log in.. not working for me anymore. No cell sig...

I just discovered how inaccurate the Dish Pointer program is. While it will give you a good idea of how high the satellites are, it does a terrible job of getting you an accurate azimuth. The compass (in the phone or in the application) varies from minute to minute and from using the app horizontally or vertically. I never could find the satellite in the woods using it so I pulled out my trusty compass and used the DirecTV on screen info to find the right azimuth. With that I found the one gap and was watching TV in no time.

Bill, do you calibrate the compass? I have a Galaxy Nexus (Android) and I find that I have to calibrate the compass every time I use it. If I don't, it behaves as you describe.

I know about two methods - turning the phone slowly (3 seconds per rotation) about each of the three axes, or waving it slowly in a figure 8. Repeat if necessary. I suggest you Google it. You'll find lots of text and a few Youtube videos as well.

Hmmmm, interesting user evaluation. Seems like we are becoming accustom to less quality in the documentation of our tools/toys. To bad. This sounds like a useful app.

I used OPI, align a site, Dslockangle, Dssattool and set the lat and long in the modem. I agree Bill, dishpointer on my iPhone leaves a lot to be desired! It never agrees with my align a site. I found a hole in the trees but I'll be darn if I can get a signal! OPI only gets to 12 tops. I changed cables and get the same thing. Any help?

Get a good hand held compass, enter your zip code in the receiver and point your antenna in that direction. That was the only thing that finally allowed me to find the correct opening in the trees in Bend, OR. With that information in hand I was able to get TV in just a matter of minutes.

Yes, if I'm in a campsite where there are lots of trees, I use DSLookAngle to find the three sat location coordinates (Hughes plus the two for the sat TV on the BOW), I then use a Suunto Tandem to find a location for the tripod where the dish will "see" all the sats. It works great!

I got the info off the receiver, I'm not to worried about skew yet but the receiver says 116??The az is about in the middle of dslookangle and the elev for tv is a little higher then dslookangle. Still would be helpful to know about true vs mag! Thanks
