After a 2-year absence, we're preparing to return to our RV for a few weeks, and I'm finalizing preparations for getting the DataStorm back online. To review, I have an early-model F1, have already bought a secondhand, decommissioned DW7000 off eBay, and have decided to stick with the LCU-1 for now (D3 upgrade may come later).
Now, I was quite proficient with my DataStorm back in the day, but a lot has changed since I've had my hands on the system, and I must confess that I've not followed the ins and outs all that closely. Hence this thread - I'm looking for advice on the current process, and pointers of where I'm headed in the wrong direction.
So. As far as I can tell, the initial upgrade process will go like this:
1. Phone MotoSAT (my chosen VAR) to set up account, get billing ID/SAN/PIN/whatever. I'm counting on them to give me what I need. Anything I need before I call them, apart from my billing details?
2. Commission DW7000 (?). This part is a mystery to me, the last modem I commissioned was done over a phone line.
3. Set up LCU-1 and DW7000 hardware. I think I've found pretty good instructions for this, as well as some otherthreads discussing the process, but comments are still welcome. I do have my old DW4000 IRU, the 4020 installer software, and Point4020, which I think are all the necessary pieces for this.
4. Set up local network. This part I can handle, it's not realy satellite-specific, especially with no D2/3 in the picture.

1) You can get your own San/Pin at https://www.imotosat.com/var/motosat/bid/mobile_system_selection.asp It is unlikely that MotoSAT will help you with the setup or commissioning without a fee (I think it's $99 per issue) and then you would need to already have the antenna up and pointed as they will not support a D1/6000/7000 installation at all. 2) The modem commissioning will begin at http://192.168.0.1/fs/advanced/advanced.html You should be able to find a topic here where the installation process is described. Maybe a search for the above link will help you find it. There are several dealers on the site that can offer you paid telephone tech. support should you need it as well. 3) Can't help you here. 4) Nothing special here, Ethernet to a router or WAP and once you have your network properly secured you should be in business.

I did a search on that local URL and found a few references but nothing very comprehensive. It sounds like it'll just prompt me for my SAN, PIN, satellite, transponder, etc., then commission itself (assuming all goes well at the NOC). I'm guessing I need to have the dish pointed before I can commission the modem, can you confirm that?
So, I'll insert a step 1.5: pointing the dish at the correct satellite, either using my old LCU-1/DW4000 combo, or manually from DSAdmin.
I'm not opposed to paying for telephone tech support if it comes to that, but I'm inclined to give it a whack myself first.

Sterling, You can do no harm taking a shot as it. You're not going to screw anything up. 1.5) Yes, you need to have the Datastorm up and locked onto any of the Hughes satellites. Since you will be assigned to IA8 by default I would suggest that you point to the 89 satellite from the start.

Now that I know what I'm looking at, I recognize that the following step from the PDF I linked to in my first post is indeed the modem-commissioning process:
quote:Access the 6000 modem from the computers internet browser using 192.168.0.1/fs/advanced/advanced.html in the address bar and hit enter. then in the advanced screen choose setup. Select registration - installer. Enter the Zip code of the installing location and select next. Verify the information is correct and select next. Enter in the satellite information to reflect the SAN ID info you received for the 6000 modem. for example 117 west, 1110 MHz, 30 msps, vertical receive, horizontal transmit. click next. Verify the information and select next. Continue to select next until you reach the Transmit antenna pointing screen and Choose Automatic. when the unit passes the Automatic cross pole select next. Select a registration server and click next. when the keys finish downloading click next. On the following prompt click OK. Click Next until you can enter in the Account information including the SAM and PIN number. When registration is complete select NEXT again. at this point you can configure the Direcway email account ( not recommended ) and click continue. A Registration Complete screen appears, click continue. A Terminal Reset window appears, Click restart. Click close. The unit is now commissioned.
(perhaps the last sentence should have given me a clue ) Sounds pretty similar to the old-school phone-line-based DW4000 commissioning we used to do, actually.

The only time I ever did this was with a 4020 before these instructions ever existed. The part I don't get about the instructions is that it has you do 11 and 12 before 13. I don't think 11 and 12 are possible unless you ove 13 ahead of them:
[quote} 11. Double click the DataStorm administrator Icon on the desk top, if prompted allow the firmware upgrade and dish calibration to complete. By pass the license registration. Use the ADVANCED settings and open configure server to override compass settings if nessasy. Find satellite. 12. Exit out of the antenna pointing software. 13. Connect the 6000 modem to the computer via the Ethernet cable provided.[/quote]

I'll keep an eye out for that, Don. Just out of curiousity, I think I'll try running DSAdmin and upgrading the firmware without attaching to the DW7000 first.

That part should be fine. I was referring to the "Find Satellite" at the end of step 11, which I think would be impossible for a D1 with no modem connected.
