I just got a new computer and am having some problems getting it configured the way I like it, and I think they're Vista-related. Bill Adams, if you see this, ignore most of my earlier e-mail. I've figured most things out but I still can't get hnFAPmon to work or DSLocator. I gather from some earlier posts I found that DSLocator probably won't play well with Vista (I searched and searched and couldn't find any cookies that seemed relevant) and I can live with that, I think -- I'll just use it for Satellite Friendly and update my map position from this site.

But the hnFAPmon just won't work. After some earlier issues with recent updates, I know the drill and I have gone through all the steps, downloaded and updated the ModemDef file and then when I go to start the program it says “failed to start”. I tried uninstalling and re-installing, this time checking the option to “start the program” after the download. This time it “failed to stop” before or after I updated the ModemDef file. I’ve checked the Windows firewall and allowed an exception for this program; I have the Kaspersky Anti-Virus program, which is new to me, and I’m still trying to figure out whether it has a firewall and if so, where it is, but I’ve gotten no indication that a firewall is blocking the program. I’ve tried everything I know how to do and am at a loss. [Confused]

First, make sure you are logged in with Administrator rights when you install hnFAPMon. First suggestion is to make sure that when you open Notepad to make the changes to ModemDef file that you right click on Notepad in the Start Menu and click 'Run as Administrator'. Otherwise, it will save the changes to the wrong place.

It is a good idea to turn your firewall off while you are installing hnFAPMon. After the installation, you can turn it back on again.

If you have the "Anti Virus" program alone it has no firewall.
However if you have the "Internet Security" you do have another firewall. It is also equipped with a anti Mal Ware program as is Vista.

Start the computer in safe mode with networking and as the administrator. See if you have success if so add programs a little at a time until you find the culprit that is blocking.
Vista is more finnicky about what operates with in it. I'm sure some body has it working just fine with the programs you desire.

Michael, I am the administrator (i.e. no separate account for administrator). I did try opening Notepad as administrator, but it didn't make any difference. I also have disabled the firewall, uninstalled everything (through the Windows uninstall program), removed all the files I could find, reinstalled and still nothing works. Apparently it's not seeing the Modem, as the Modem status is blank. The correct IP address is showing. I've also re-booted a couple of times. Any more ideas? This is my one remaining problem (at least that I know of!) and it's driving me nuts!

Art--thank you for the information on Kaspersky -- that's what I thought but there was something in there that looked like a firewall but not exactly.

Has to be something we are missing as many others are using Vista and hnFAPMon without any problems. The fact that it is loading but not showing Modem status would indicate, as you noted, that it isn't seeing the modem on 192.168.0.1, Broadcast Port 6000. You might try checking the Allow Telnet access to the modem box and restarting the service to see if that helps. I am certain that you can ping 192.168.0.1 and find it from your internet browser. If so you obviously have a connection and hnFAPMon should be able to see it.

At the risk of wearing out my welcome, here is what I just went through (minus swear words and wine):
-Uninstall hnFAPmon
-Go through every file individually and delete every leftover file that says hnFAPmon
-Open Internet Explorer (I usually use Firefox, but have discovered that some programs download into Vista more easily in IE)
-Go to the sourceforge website, download hnFAPmon -- it saves into Program Files (I've also tried saving into my User file, without any success); complete setup process (wherever there is a check-box that says "start" or "launch", I uncheck it. (In previous attempts I haven't always done this, just left the "starting" boxes checked -- it doesn't seem to make a difference.)
-Back to sourceforge, download "update ModemDef update", go through same process.
Open Notepad (as Administrator), open Modem Def files, make amendment for latest software. Save.
-Re-boot computer.
-When system re-starts, get message asking if I want to select a skin; I select the appropriate file.
-Open hnFAPmon Control Panel. It says the program is "stopped"; click "start"; get message that "failed to start".
-Click Network Settings, check Modem IP address, it says 192.168.1.1 (again, this isn't always the case -- sometimes it's right without changing); change first 1 to 0, click OK. Also check box for allowing Telnet to see modem. Get message to the effect that changes can't be saved because it requires stopping (or starting, can't remember which) the program, which couldn't be done, try again manually. Go through the prior step again, get "failed to start", check Network Settings, IP address has been corrected. All other settings are correct, I believe.
-Right click on "bucket", check Modem Status, still blank, not reading modem.
-Swear a while and then come here.

I really hate this, but I've always depended so much on the FAP monitor (it's avoided a problem more than once) and I just don't want to do without it if I don't have to.

Thanks for your patience.

Margaret

Margaret, sorry you are having some many problems with hnFAPMon. Could you verify that the service is set to automatic by clicking on Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, then scroll down to hnFAPMon and right click then click on properties. Start Up Type should then be displayed. It should read "Automatic" or "Manual" but not "Disabled".

I also didn't notice in your detailed process (thanks for the care in going through the steps with us) that you had turned off Windows Firewall before installing and running hnFAPMon. Hopefully you did and it just wasn't on the list.

The "service failed to start" is a deal killer. Nothing will work on hnFAPMon unless the service is running on one computer on the network (it doesn't have to be the one on the Vista machine if you have another computer on the network that the service can be running on. The service can only be running on one computer on the network at a time.

I normally run the service on my XP machine with the client running on both the XP and the Vista machines. As a test, I disabled the service on the XP and set it to Manual on the Vista desktop, then started the service without and problems.

You indicated that you saved the download program to the Program Files directory. I saved the download files to a data directory (actually on a Network Attached Storage device) then installed it from there. However, that really shouldn't matter.

A quote from someone helping out this morning with a user with Vista, over on BBR:

(make sure) All 5 .exe files in the hnFAPmon program folder are set to run as administrator

We're sitting in Kansas in 40+ mph winds, so I'm working on the campground wi-fi right now. It may be tomorrow before I'm able to get the Datastorm up and running again, but I'll try all the suggestions. Yes, Michael, I had disabled the Windows firewall; can't believe I forgot that one!

This should be the only machine hnFAPmon runs on. I have uninstalled it on my other laptop and, in any event, that machine was turned off, so it shouldn't have interfered.

Don: since on this machine Owner=Administrator=me, that shouldn't be an issue, but I'll double check the program file when I can. (I uninstalled the whole thing this morning in a fit of pique -- I'll go through the whole exercise again!)

Thanks again for your help -- if we don't blow away, I'll be back tomorrow with results.

Margaret

Some time ago there was a comedienne who wrote a book or something called "Hi, God, it's me again." That's the way I feel about now! But this time, at least for the time being, it's good news.

I just tried (three times) everything I know how to try and everything that has been suggested. Nothing worked, except that I was able to get the program seeing the modem -- progress. But when I would try to stop or start using the Control Panel shortcut (as I have always done), the program would either fail to start or fail to stop. So, in the process of checking the .exe files as Don suggested, a new control panel came up when I clicked "run as administrator". I thought what the heck, clicked on start/stop and was able to stop and start again and voila, information being received! Now to see whether it survives a re-boot (which I don't plan to do for a couple of days!). But at least I think I know how to get it back. I think I won't be using the shortcut! [Roll Eyes]

Thanks again for your patience and help.

Margaret
