Summer is here and I'm going to need to pick a provider and bandwidth package for my XF3 / 3100 / 4 watt BUC. Hoping somebody here as some real world experiences with new providers, I would like to get something turned up by May 15th or so, my bus is already out in the wild, sans Internet, I need to catch up with it and turn up some sat Internet.

Thanks,

Wayne

Call MobilSAT in Va. Beach. You can talk to Bud Burton or one of his techs to find a plan that's right for you.

I went with the MobilSat Freedom Pro plan - 1500 Kbps down/ 200 Kbps up. This is a high contention plan so I've never seen those speeds that I know of. I don't check it often but seems like 700-800K down and 70-80K up is pretty typical.

The experience is definitely more sluggish than EtherSat was on its good days, but this is a cheaper plan and the network is definitely stable. Have had little trouble with downtime. From what I can tell looking at their service plans, to get any higher performance than this from MobilSat would be significantly more expensive.

I think you have those numbers reversed. And I think that's the same plan I'm on. But I don't use it very often - we're current at Hearthside Grove in Petoskey and using Charter Cable internet.

You're right! I fixed it. Yes, I have about decided to get Verizon broadband for when I need better speeds and have a signal. Combined with MobilSat that would have me paying about as much as I was with EtherSat. I'll just have to watch the monthly download limit.

Forget about Verizon and sign up with Millenicom (Verizon service). You can see their plans here:
http://www.millenicom.com/page/plans
I am using the hotspot with 10GB of 4GB plus 10GB of 3G (it shifts to 3G service if I exceed the 10GB limit on 4G) for $79.99/month. I have had a Verizon air card plugged into a WiFi Ranger but I just canceled that service in favor of the Millenicom plan.

So I see the 3G/4G plan is now $69.99. How can they offer 20 total GB on the Verizon network for less than Verizon offers 10GB? I don't see any reference to Verizon on their site. I definitely like the hotspot since I have 2 computers.

Trust me, it's Verizon. They have a non-discloser agreement with Verizon, but none the less, it's Verizon. How do they do it? I don't care!

Ditto what Bill said. We have Millenicom as well. They're a bulk reseller of Verizon service, but they're not allowed to say so. But if you compare the service maps, you can tell which service they're reselling.

I got my Dad hooked up with them, and he dropped his Hughes service. He had Hughes for a number of years before Verizon put in a tower about 1/2 mile from him. He's much happier with his MiFi unit...

Put it this way - I go to the Verizon site to check my service usage for my Millenicom account. [Smile]

Like others, I have the Millenicom MiFi plan - 10GB of 4G, 10GB of 3G. How do we know it's from Verizon, the MiFi still has the Verizon stickers on it! But, the folks at Millenicom told me there was no automatic drop back to 3G if you used 10GB of 4G service. You had to go into the MiFi unit and manually change it to accept 3G only service.

Following on Joe's comment, how can I find the phone number of my MiFi in order to setup the Verizon login to check my usage.

The number is on the card and on the info on the box the mifi was in. The problem is that to setup your account Verizon will send a text to that device with the login information and your mifi cannot receive a text message.
If anyone finds a work-around for this problem please let me know as the tech support people at Verizon and Millenicom have not been able to help

Has anybody tried any of the Ericsson Fixed Wireless Termjnals in their coaches? You get a full GSM worldwide radio which takes a SIM card of any carrier (AT&T for me) and you get a cradle point type box with abgn wifi hotspot plus two RJ-11 jacks for wired phones (a cordless system in the RV is handy) and a second RJ11 for a fax machine. Supports an external antenna for the GSM radioa, looks whizzy. Google for the G35 and G36 models I believe, the windows are open up on my laptop but I, writing from my ipad at the moment or I'd provide URLs. Seems these are designed for homes but. Being targeted at boaters / marine, RV seems like another good use. I'm probably going to order one for my birthday today and check it out.

Once again I have to agree with Bill:
quote:
Call MobilSAT in Va. Beach. You can talk to Bud Burton or one of his techs to find a plan that's right for you.
If you liked EtherSat (up until June 16 at 10 AM that is) then call MobilSat 757-312-8300 and get a salesperson to explain all the plans. You can certainly ask for Bud, but he's been really busy lately. If you call the service Department on the weekend, you have a 50-50 chance of getting me. You may be strongly encouraged to get an X5 modem, evolution series. If this will get you on an evolution series network, I would do it. In fact I did do it :-). The X5 integrates well with the MotoSat product line. The network is constantly evolving, and as networks fill up, new capacity is added. The other five Tech's and I are working on a capacity improvement for our US customers. The service department is open for business from 8:30 AM until 9 PM Eastern time everyday.
