Just wanted to add another data point. This weekend I did a couple of speed tests and must have found myself the only one on my little corner of the network. I saw 1.4M down and 146K up, so within spitting distance of plan speeds. A subsequent test a bit later was back in the range I reported in an earlier post.
Watching for the mailman to bring me my HotSpot today!

So Joe, how did you set this up? I read in another forum to call Verizon and have them snail-mail you a password to use when registering on their website for an account using the MiFi phone number.
I called Verizon but they couldn't even access the account for the wireless number.

Setup and account online first and then let them know that you are not able to receive the text. Ask that they send it info snail mail or e-mail. I have not had any luck with either but others say they have. You already have the phone number (it's in the setup screen and it's printed on the box look for a series of 10 numbers!).

Nope, tried that twice and both times they wanted to start with a phone number and they are blocked from accessing my wifi mobile number account. It tells them it is a federal account and they are not able to work with it. They said they could snail-mail the password if it was an account they had access to, but they do not.
Like Rosanne Rosana Danna said - it's always something!

yes, and received an email saying that the temp password had been sent to the device. I told them that and that the device could not receive text. They said they could mail me a password until they realized they could not access the account - they wanted to access via the mobile number, not my login. I guess without being able to call up the mobile number they don't have visibility to the mailing address associated with the device.

I wonder what would happen if I put the SIM card from the MiFi into my Verizon phone - would it be able to get the text or perhaps screw up my phone. I know nothing about how SIM cards work within these things.

I'll answer another of my own questions - found on a Verizon FAQ that an activated 4G SIM card can be moved between 4G devices. I forgot my cell phone is pre-4G. Drats, that would have been an easy solution. Guess I could upgrade my phone - I am eligible but not really wanting a new one.

I'm no expert either - just know it means 4th generation technology and only newer devices will support 4G.
I realized that the Blackberry Bold 9930 I have through work is supposed to support the 4G network. I took the SIM out of it and put in the SIM from the MiFi. The Blackberry booted but it got hung up trying to log into blackberry services and wanted to wipe the device if I did not log in.
Maybe it is really not a 4G device - the SIM card that came in it did not say 4G on it. Oh well, will keep lurking for a solution. One might be to find a friendly local Verizon store that would put my SIM card in a demo device long enough to get the text message.
Bill, if both your devices have a 4G SIM card under the battery, you may be able to swap them long enough to get the text. FYI, my MiFi came back up fine after the attempted transplant.
We totally hijacked Wayne thread, but I appreciate the opp to learn about this new device/service.

If it has a 4G SIMs and you decide to give it a try - I picked up a couple of tips on how to get the card out. They may or may not be spring loaded. Poke on top of the SIM card or maybe just off it on the end where it slides out and you may hear the click of the spring releasing. If not, get some scotch tape, press it on the SIM card and then lift slightly and slide it out.

Well, that was a bummer! The MiFi has a SIM card but my phone had a micro SIM card. No way to make a swap! Maybe there is a micro SIM adapter like my micro SD card adapter but that won't work since what I would really need would be a standard to micro adapter. If anyone else has any ideas it would be most appreciated. In reality, I doubt there is much chance I will ever exceed 20GB in a month but I would like to be able to take a look if I wanted to.
