It happened late yesterday... Hughes changed me from 990 to 1230. Signal strength dropped about 10 points, speed remains about the same. Didn't notice the change until I opened the admin program to stow the dish and the pop up advised me of the mismatch. I haven't heard of, or experienced any problems with the 990 transponder so maybe they are trying to rebalance the system.

Signal Strength on 1230 is certainly lower than some of the other transponders but it doesn't seem to affect its performance at this point. I hope that Hughes doesn't move enough folks over to 1230 to wipe out its performance.

After seeing your post I checked my stats. I was changed from 990 to 999, and my symbol rate was changed to 15. I haven't heard of anyone on a symbol rate of 15.

I've also been moved from 990 to 999, symbol rate of 15. It looks like Hughes is stirring us around again (only 6 months since the last change)!

Very much last the last time Hughes was screwing with us, Don's Admin program still sees a configuration match even though the status screen shows the change. I guess we should all check our modem configuration prior to deploying the dish.

It's likely that the 999 and 15 is a temporary assignment as Hughes does not want their 7000/7000S customers on this kind of a setup. I would expect another change that would put you on a 30/33 symbol rate transponder.
It might be worth running through a new registration-installer routine to see if it would force an update.

When they move a transponder off its assigned value (990 in this case) they have to lower the symbol rate or it will interfere with the adjacent frequency. It usually means the particular transponder is in trouble.

My SQ has dropped from about 65 on transponder 990 to 48-49 on transponder 999. Maybe Bill Adams is right so I will wait a few days before I do anything and see if it changes again.

I have a customer who is unable to lock onto 1230/V now. Generic and 1130/H works. SQ is only about 47 once we lock on and then move back to 1230 again, so that's very low as well. The newest sat. table does not have any changes from the 4-20 version so I am concerned that something else may have changed as well since Generic V does not locate but Generic H does.
Anyone else using a D3 on 117/1230/V?

DATASTORM % gsn

checking: name = SatMex 5 116.8W V, freq = 11985, ifreq = 1235, timeout 1
locked: symrate = 30031, viterbi = 5 (7/8)
match!!

No problem locating SM5 V here, so if there is a table problem it is with some other nearby satellite that didn't affect things from my location.

Possibly signal is weak? Note that it is the 1230 frequency being used (1235, which is part of the 1230 space), so if it is weak you might need a more sensitive setting.

Sounds like it may be getting time to think about leaving Sat Mex 5. What is the best bird to switch to? We need good coverage in the Midwest, and Southwest, and we use BOW. I know the answer may be a crap shoot, but I would like some opinions from you installers that have experience with many of the satellites.

General rule: The only satellites that do not hit every part of the 48 states are the one you are on (SM5) and SM6. Horizons1 is poor in the Northeast.

That means that you can throw a dart at the plethora of satellites (72, 83, 87, 89, 91, 93, 99) and expect them all to be, on average, equal. "On average" is because on every single one of them there will be someone having trouble, anywhere in the country. It won't be because the satellite is in trouble (most likely) but rather because their equipment, transponder, or gateway is having trouble.

You just need one you can point your BOW to.

Horizons1 is also very poor in the SW along the Mexican border.
I was able to lock on with ST set to 4 but could not lock on with it set to 3 and a V setting. It found adjacent satellites but would not identify 117. Odd! They are currently in Pismo Beach, CA so what you are seeing should be the same thing that they are seeing.

If I remember there are footprint maps for the satellites on this site, but I don't remember where to find them.

Second question, how low can SQ go before I will start having trouble staying locked on? I have been watching the SQ get lower. I am now 43 to 45. We have clear sky here now (I am down the street from you Bill Adams).

I was just now moved back to 990, rate code 30. There was a brief drop in service while they moved me back. Luckily, I'm not changing my location for a while so (hopefully) they will be able to fix whatever they're working on!
