My computer is directly connected to the HN7000s modem.
Is there anyway to use an external scanner (Netcat for ex) to check my iptables rules and logging?
All seems to work as expected over Starband.

On Hughes, logging after a scan doesn't list port numbers or source IP.
Packets are blocked even if computer firewall is disabled, making firewall tuning difficult.
Is there any way to disable the Hughes firewall?
Thanks for any help.

If I understand your question correctly, this is the answer:

If you have a dynamic IP, the modem blocks all inbound connections, period. No way to configure or turn the firewall off.

If you have a static IP, the modem blocks NO inbound connections, period. No way to turn the firewall on.

Static IPs are an extra-cost option.

Thanks for the info, Don.

Anybody have any ideas on whether a dynamic IP is more secure than a static address for a one computer direct to modem setup? Ignoring the built-in Hughes firewall, it seems like a dynamic IP might be more of a moving target.

With the Hughes dynamic IP your system is completely invisible to the internet.
